A judicial review brought jointly by the environment groups Greenpeace and Uplift is due to be heard at the Court of Session in Edinburgh. The campaigners want to stop the development of Rosebank oil field, which is off Shetland, and the Jackdaw gas field, off Aberdeen. But oil companies say the projects are vital. If the challenge is successful, operators would have to resubmit environmental impact assessments for approval before drilling can begin." The Midstream and Downstream Environmental Regulations, 2023 (Environmental Regulations) and the Midstream and Downstream Environmental Remediation Fund Regulations, 2023 (Fund Regulations) (together, the “Regulations”) were made by the Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Authority) on 10th May 2023 to address and mitigate the negative environmental impacts associated with midstream and downstream petroleum operations in Nigeria. Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published the final Greenhouse Gas Reporting Rule requirements for petroleum and natural gas systems under 40 C.F.R. Part 98, Subpart W in the Federal Register. The changes to this rule resulted from passing the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 which required EPA to develop standards to collect payment on methane from facilities that exceed specific thresholds.
