Fond memories triggered by all these National Intern Day posts! Looking back on my intern days (over 20 years ago, eek), I am so grateful for the experiences I had with two different companies/organizations, both still going strong today. 👏 Shout out to the folks at the Wisconsin Innovation Service Center at UWW for giving students amazing, real-world experiences in research, product development and go-to-market strategy! 👏 And another shout out to Palmer Hamilton (formerly Palmer Synder Furniture) for enabling me all those years ago to digitize their contract records, and create a database with renewal alerts - all before I even knew what a CRM system was! To see how much the company has changed in 20 years is a great example of adaptation and strategy at work! Each of those experiences helped me build a foundation for skills I still use today and gave me exposure to the types of work I love. And when I had interns on my team, those experiences shaped my style of leadership - to give them real, challenging projects (and feedback), to provide exposure to other professionals and leaders, and to give as much business context for what they were doing as possible. And most importantly - to give them room to share ideas and to actually listen to them! Get after it interns, you'll do great things!

Get to know our team! Today we are featuring Lucas Greenberg our summer intern from Case Western Reserve University! What do you do at UH Ventures in one sentence? - I've been interning with Matthew Zenker and the new UH Haslam Sports Innovation Center with their incoming deal flow. I research, analyze, and compile a variety of data and information to assess sports-medicine and health companies/markets to help accelerate and invest in them. I'm also working on the upcoming SportsLand event with Patricia Colella, MBA, by helping out in all areas of event management. What are your favorite things to do outside of school? - I love to exercise and try new workouts, but more importantly, I love to eat. During COVID, I began cooking and baking as a way to unwind; I try to make a meal four times a week. My favorite dish to make is my grandfather’s shrimp and pea risotto. Favorite binge-worthy TV show? - The Office. I have seen The Office over five times and I can quote certain scenes by heart! What is your favorite restaurant in Cleveland? - Batuqui; a fun Brazilian summer dinner spot. What do you love about Cleveland? - I was born and raised all around Cleveland, and throughout my time, there has been one constant: the people. In 2006, during my summer internship, Kevin Sharer, the then CEO of Amgen, was invited to speak at McKinsey's New York office -- he was an alumnus of the Firm. After his talk, someone asked him, "What is the hardest part of being a good CEO?" He said, "Some jobs require you to think at a 60,000-foot level. You think about strategy, competition, and all the big picture stuff. Some other jobs need you to think at the 6-foot level -- you get into an incredible level of detail. "A CEO has to be able to operate at the 60,000-foot level, at the 6-foot level, and at every level in between. And you have to be able to make these transitions nearly instantly -- sometimes from one meeting to another. "This ability to effortlessly move up and down the ladder of abstraction is one of the hardest things about a CEO's job." As the CEO, one moment, you might be figuring out why the assembly line is breaking down. The next moment, you might be looking at entering a new market. Nothing is off the table. The higher your ambition, the wider the range of issues you should be willing to grapple with. Some people have depth. Some have breadth. Excellent example Rajan Singh of a 'T' shaped employee, wherein the noticeable trait is the elasticity with which one can move and anchor on points of interest and attention on both dimensions - the horizontal (zoom out / 60,000 ft) and vertical line (zoom in / 6 ft) making it up! Good to know of such professional grooming philosophies when in the academia itself - start as a 'V' shaped (6 ft at start simultaneously adjusting binoculars towards 60,000 ft) and get chiseled on the way to a 'T' shaped. #ProactiveToWin
