"The term “Large Ocean States” is used to refer to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to emphasize their extensive maritime zones and the significant role the ocean plays in their economies, cultures, and environments." - International Science Council It has now taken me on a journey to connect more with cultures, communities and individuals who are working and protecting our oceans, the beating heart of our planet. Did you know today, July 5, is National Hawaii Day? I'm going to Hawaii at the end of the month. It's been a place that's been on my bucket list for a while and I'm very excited to go. So of course I've been doing my research on the history, the culture, and basically everything Hawaii. Here's some fun facts I've learned: 🌴 Island Formation: Hawaii is the most isolated population center on Earth, located 3,846 km from California and 6196 km from Japan. The islands were formed by volcanic activity over a hotspot in the Earth's mantle. 🌴Tropical Climate: Hawaii has a tropical climate with only two seasons: summer (kau) from May to October and winter (hooilo) from November to April. Despite this, the weather can vary greatly between different parts of the islands. 🌴World's Tallest Mountain: When measured from its base on the ocean floor, Mauna Kea on the Big Island is the world's tallest mountain, standing over 33,500 feet tall, which is even taller than Mount Everest. 🌴Hawaiian Lei: The lei is a traditional Hawaiian garland made of flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, or feathers. It is often given as a symbol of love, friendship, celebration, honor, or greeting. May 1st is celebrated as Lei Day in Hawaii, with festivities featuring lei-making competitions, hula, music, and parades. 🌴Hula Dance: Hula is a traditional Hawaiian dance that tells stories through movement. There are two main styles of hula: ancient hula (hula kahiko) and modern hula (hula ʻauana), each with distinct music and choreography. 🌴Volcanic Activity: Hawaii is home to some of the world's most active volcanoes. Kīlauea, located on the Big Island, has been erupting continuously since 1983. Mauna Loa, also on the Big Island, is the largest volcano on Earth in terms of volume and area covered. Unfortunately, elephants face numerous threats in the wild, including habitat loss, poaching for ivory, and human-wildlife conflict. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensuring the survival of these magnificent animals for future generations to admire and learn from. In conclusion, elephants are not just impressive in size and appearance but also in their social dynamics, intelligence, and emotional depth.
