We have signed a statement of the #Syria INGO Regional Forum #sirf on the escalating violence: "Humanitarian needs across Syria have never been higher than they are today. 16.7 million people need assistance – nearly half are children. Escalating conflict risks driving these needs higher at a time when donor support for Syria is decreasing. Instead of perpetually having to revert to emergency humanitarian response when incidences of conflict increase, the humanitarian community would rather engage with communities and donors in addressing medium to long-term needs through early recovery interventions and pave the way to alleviate poverty across Syria. This will only be possible through immediate cessation of all hostilities across the region, enhanced protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and increased support for humanitarian and early recovery interventions." Tragic Loss in Gaza: Israeli Strikes Hit Orphanage and School In a devastating escalation of conflict, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have claimed at least 65 lives, including many children, following attacks on an orphanage and a school. Eyewitnesses describe chaos and destruction as emergency responders work to rescue survivors from the rubble. Humanitarian organizations, including UNICEF, have condemned the strikes, highlighting the urgent need for aid and protection of civilian spaces. The loss has left many families grieving and compounded the already dire humanitarian crisis in the region. International reactions have been swift, with calls for an independent investigation and renewed efforts for a ceasefire. The United Nations has expressed alarm over the escalating violence and its toll on civilians, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding vulnerable populations. As the cycle of violence continues, the need for a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is more urgent than ever. The recent tragedy underscores the critical importance of prioritizing peace and humanitarian support to prevent further loss of life. Pakology--

World Vision is urgently responding to the escalating crisis in #Syria, where the overthrow of the Assad regime has triggered a devastating humanitarian emergency. In just 10 days, 178,000 people have been displaced, hundreds of civilians have been killed or injured, and millions are left in desperate need of assistance. This crisis adds to 14 years of relentless conflict, leaving almost 70% of the Syrian population reliant on aid. “The overall situation has hampered the availability and accessibility of basic services. Critical services such as access to food, clean water, and sanitation are under pressure. Children in particular, are impacted,” said World Vision Syria Response Director, Emmanuel Isch. “There is an urgent need for immediate funding to support those affected by the recent escalation of events in Syria, especially children, who have mostly grown up in a context of conflict. We must do everything in our power to protect them and enable a future with hope. World Vision calls on all parties to prioritize peace and put the well-being of children first,” Isch added. 🔗 Learn more and support our efforts: wvuk.org/l3oR50Uo6Gw #SyriaCrisis #HumanitarianAid #SyrianAppeal

16.7 million people in Syria require aid, 4.2 million of these people in need live in northwest Syria #NWS– the highest number since 2011. The conflict, earthquakes, and regional tensions have worsened the situation. The Syria Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) needs $4.07 billion to deliver critical assistance to these people. Early recovery that UNDP is leading the way on is a cost-effective way to rehabilitate basic services, revitalize livelihoods and create resilience. Act now to prevent further suffering. #SyriaCrisis #HumanitarianAid https://lnkd.in/d_Bpzdiq

We join the Syrian people in their unwavering hope and cautious optimism for a better future. However, the humanitarian needs inside Syria remain enormous. The escalation over the past two weeks has triggered new displacements with an estimated one million people fleeing the violence, bringing the number of displaced people higher than eight million. CARE stands by the people of Syria and is ready to support them to rebuild their country. As Syria enters this transitional period, it is essential to support local civil society and women-led organisations, who are best placed to lead efforts to rebuild their country in line with the aspirations of their people. The escalating violence in Palestine and Lebanon brings back memories from my time working in the region years ago and more recently to Gaza this year. The human toll of these conflicts is unbearable. Just yesterday, deadly attacks in Lebanon claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians, displaced thousands more, and further destabilized the region. Communities that have already endured so much are being torn apart again. Families deserve the chance to rebuild their lives, not more conflict and destruction. Humanitarian workers, who put their own lives at risk to offer relief, need protection to continue their life-saving work. The cycle of violence and displacement must end. While we do everything we can to provide medical aid and support, lasting peace and political solutions are essential to stop this suffering. We must keep the human impact front and center as we work for a better future. Between 2007 and 2010, Lebanon experienced an average GDP growth of 9.1%, showcasing its economic potential. However, the outbreak of the Syrian civil war caused GDP growth to plummet to below 1%, a decline further exacerbated by subsequent crises. To unlock Lebanon’s economic potential, significant international assistance will be needed to address the $2.8 billion in housing damage caused by the recent Israel-Lebanon conflict. With strategic rebuilding efforts and support, Lebanon has the opportunity to not only recover but also serve as a model for post-conflict growth, leveraging its diverse ethnic and religious population as a cornerstone for resilience and unity.
Since October 31, 2022, #Lebanon has operated under a caretaker government, compounded by an economic crisis ranked among the world’s worst. The recent #Israel-#Hezbollah war has only worsened the nation’s humanitarian challenges. However, a glimmer of hope emerged as Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri announced a presidential election for January 9, 2025. “I hope this will be a new page for Lebanon,” Berri stated. Under the Lebanese Constitution, the 128-member parliament elects a Christian Maronite president for a six-year term. For the 1.3 million displaced Lebanese, the prospect of new leadership raises hopes for rebuilding after widespread destruction. According to the World Bank, 99,209 housing units were damaged in the conflict, with 18% completely destroyed and 82% partly damaged, resulting in losses estimated at $2.8 billion. This highlights the critical need for humanitarian organizations to provide sustainable shelters and support families striving to rebuild their lives. While the Israeli military has struck sites in Lebanon, the ceasefire appears to be holding, offering a fragile but vital opportunity for recovery. #WorldBank #Ceasefire #Reconstruction #HumanitarianAid
