Regenerative agriculture can play a crucial role in meeting global climate goals and ensuring we can provide affordable and nutritious food for generations to come. Transitioning to regenerative forms of agriculture requires a systemic approach benefiting all stakeholders, from farmers to corporate businesses. 🌍 Together with Foodvalley NL, and with support from Food Collective , we have launched a €30 million Regenerative Innovation Portfolio as a Food Innovation Hub Europe initiative. The Portfolio fosters a collaborative community for sharing knowledge and experiences, promoting successful partnerships and innovation. 🤝 As the world's largest food innovation community, we will match partner contributions up to €5 million annually until 2025, potentially reaching a total investment of €30 million. “By matching funding from partners in the Regenerative Innovation Portfolio, EIT Food aims to enable a significant commitment to the #regenerative transition within Europe”, says Richard Zaltzman, our Chief Executive Officer. 🌱 To date, the Regenerative Innovation Portfolio has already identified five potential priority landscapes throughout Europe where multiple stakeholders – such as regional governments, investors, and retailers – have mutual interests and are willing to collaborate. Thank you, Pernod Ricard, for organizing the #Toast2Tomorrow inspiring event! Regenerative agriculture is not just a theoretical concept—real-world examples show the immense potential it has, and with the right policies and support, we can scale these benefits across Europe and beyond. What are the standout moments and key insights that are driving us forward for the next EU policy cycle? 🌾 Farmers first! Policy makers must shift from offering subsidies to providing genuine support, ensuring that the transition to regenerative practices doesn't reduce farmers' incomes. 📊 The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) should adopt an outcome-based approach, using photosynthesis measurement as a key indicator for success and sustainability. 🌱 Agriculture must be profitable within planetary boundaries. Long-term objectives are crucial, and farmers should be rewarded for their ecosystem services, shifting the risk away from them. 🇪🇺 The green agenda is progressing, with 32% of CAP funding for sustainability. Member States need to take charge of implementing effective reforms. The next European Commission should revive the Food Systems Directive to create a strong legal framework for cohesive, sustainable agriculture across Europe. 🤝A holistic approach is crucial. Industry and policy must work together, focusing on terroir-specific strategies that reflect the unique needs of different landscapes. As Stefania Avanzini shared during the event, OP2B emphasizes a results-based strategy that not only supports farmers economically but also nurtures our soils, safeguards water resources, preserves biodiversity, and mitigates climate emissions. To accelerate the transition, we urge the adoption of policies that promote public-private collaboration to finance and de-risk farmers' transition. We’d like to thank Pernod Ricard for organizing and hosting this inspiring event and all participants who shared their knowledge and ideas! 🌱 Exciting insights from the EU AgriFood Days today in Brussels! 🌍 The event opened with inspiring speeches by President Ursula von der Leyen and Agriculture and Food Commissioner Hansen, both highlighting the pivotal role of farming in shaping Europe's future: 🔹 President von der Leyen emphasised the importance of rewarding farmers' hard work and creating better incentives for young people to enter the sector - ensuring they can make a fair living and establish thriving organic businesses. 🔹 Commissioner Hansen stressed the need for increased funding, investments, and incentives for sustainable practices. By doing so, the EU aims to balance competitiveness, climate goals, and generational renewal. As he put it, "I want to create a better future for our future generation of farmers and a better environment for our children. This requires collaboration from all actors." 🌟 During the "Farming for the future: Voices from the field" panel, two remarkable organic farmers shared their experiences: 🍇 Vojtěch Válka, an organic winemaker and farmfluencer from the Czech Republic, whose family pioneered organic viticulture over 30 years ago. He reminded us that “Nature wants a jungle, not a single crop” and advocated for embracing diversity in farming. 🌾 Elin Rydström, a dairy farmer and vegetable grower near Stockholm, Sweden, highlighted the resilience and adaptability needed to address today’s challenges. She stressed that innovations from organic farming, like resilient crop varieties, can benefit the entire sector - including conventional farming. Key topics discussed throughout the morning included: ✅ Access to land and involving farmers in decision-making ✅ Ensuring food production remains a shared societal concern ✅ Leveraging social media to amplify the farming way of life ✅ Meeting consumers' demand for transparency about food origins Let’s keep the conversation going to build a stronger, more sustainable agri-food system! Explore the agenda of the next two days 🤓👉 https://ow.ly/TsEo50UotIa #EUAgriFoodDays #OrganicFarming #OrganicAgriculture #FutureOfFarming #OrganicIsPartOfTheSolution #MakingEuropeMoreOrganic

🌱 Celebrating World Soil Day with KOIS 🌱 🌟 Last week, KOIS Associate Matteo Vanzini represented our team at Impact Europe Week, where he hosted a thought-provoking panel discussion on Transitioning to Regenerative Agriculture through Collaborative Financing, building on KOIS's work with SoilValues. The session brought together leaders in sustainability, finance, and agriculture to explore actionable solutions. Here are three key insights that emerged: 🔬Technology Technology appeals to private equity investors and can significantly boost farm productivity, but it shouldn’t be the cornerstone of regenerative agriculture. The priority is bridging the gap between innovation and adoption—supporting farmers in leveraging these tools when they’re relevant and aligned with their transition. 🎯 Target While incentivizing farmers is crucial, focusing solely on them won’t deliver the transformative change we need. Other stakeholders and value chain actors must also adapt and commit to the transition to ensure changes at the farm level are effective and sustainable. 🤝 Collaboration Incentivising regenerative agriculture requires multi-stakeholder collaboration, but many organizations approach this issue from different angles, shaped by diverse interests and perspectives. Instead of using financial innovation to force alignment, we should create platforms that value and leverage these differences to channel a variety of supports toward a shared goal: advancing and scaling regenerative agriculture. At KOIS, we’re committed to fostering collaboration and deploying financial innovations that drive meaningful progress in regenerative agriculture 🌍 You can find the discussion paper of SoilValues in the comments 📄 #RegenerativeAgriculture #SustainableFarming #ImpactWeek2024 #CollaborativeFinancing #KOISImpact #InnovationForGood #SoilValues

And we’re off!... Although EIT Food #NextBite officially kicks off tomorrow, we are here with some exciting side events today, and there are a few key topics already grabbing our attention. This morning’s opening session hosted by Sara Roversi took a deep dive into the regenerative transition in agriculture, with key European stakeholders leading the charge. Italy, our wonderful host country for NextBite, was front and centre as a case study. Did you know? Over 400 farmers in Italy are already involved in regenerative programs, covering around 30,000 hectares of land! There was plenty of discussion around the massive funding needed to support biodiversity, with an eye-watering $700 billion a year estimated by 2030. But it's not just about the money—policymakers are also grappling with how to balance environmental sustainability, socio-economic needs, and making our food supply chains more resilient. The session also touched on how we can better support smallholder farmers and the importance of innovation in transforming agricultural businesses. It will be an exciting few days with the EIT Food RisingFoodStars, and I can’t wait to see what more comes out of #NextBite. #regenerativefarming #futurefood #foodsystems #sustainablefoodsystems

💬 In conversation with Patrick Holden, Founder & CEO of Sustainable Food Trust We recently caught up with Patrick to discuss some of the critical factors needed to successfully implement regenerative practices 🚀 Here are our top five takeaways: 🤝🏽 Collective Engagement of Stakeholders: The involvement of stakeholders with practical farming and food system experience is crucial to developing effective agricultural policies. Without this grounding in practical experience, policies risk failing to deliver the intended impacts. 🚧 Barriers to Sustainable Practices: Economic factors are the main barriers to adopting climate-positive and sustainable farming practices. Profitable but extractive farming practices have caused damage, and a comprehensive, globally harmonized framework of metrics is needed to measure and reward sustainable practices accurately. ⚖ Standardized Metrics: Establishing standardized metrics is essential for measuring land sustainability and ensuring a smooth transition to regenerative agriculture. Without this, the proliferation of varied corporate frameworks can lead to public confusion and potential greenwashing. 📖 Importance of Storytelling: Storytelling is vital for engaging the public and driving agricultural transition. Effective storytelling combines emotional and intellectual elements, avoids jargon, and reconnects people with nature, fostering a deeper understanding of their relationship with the environment. 💲 Financial Support and Subsidies: A holistic design of financial incentives and subsidies is needed to support farmers in transitioning to sustainable practices. These should reward climate-positive, nature-friendly, and socially beneficial farming practices, and continuously adjust as the transition progresses. Patrick will be opening this year's European Summit, will you be joining him in Amsterdam this September? 🎫 Ticket prices increase tomorrow at midnight, register today and save up to €400: https://lnkd.in/ejaxuTwn #regenerativeagriculture
