This forest management success story reminds me of the presentation I recently attended by Dr. Lyla June Johnston in which she shared the many ways that Native Peoples in the US and other areas managed the forests, coasts, rivers and lakes to create abundance for themselves and the lifeforms around them. For example, there were vast food forests in the US that the Native People managed (black walnut, acorn, etc.). Dr. Johnston talks about the Native food systems and their management versus how current industrial food production destroys the soil, harms the environment, reduces biodiversity and reduces the ability to produce abundance. In contrast, she shares about Native Food Systems: "One of the common denominators among all these food systems which I find incredibly fascinating is the construction of habitat. That is what a lot of our food systems seem to be about, where we actually construct an environment that is hospitable to certain species that we eat. And then those species come to us." To listen to or read more, watch this interview or read the transcript below. It is fascinating and exciting to think about what could be. We could create environments where we can all thrive: https://lnkd.in/gHheBYcB And you can see how Nepal increased their forests in this NASA article. Great work! #natureheals #wearenature #nativeamerican #wisdom #indigenousknowledge #climateresilience

We should all follow Nepal’s shining reforestation example . 🌳🌳 In just 24 years the Himalayan kingdom has nearly doubled it’s forest cover from 26% in 1992 to 45% in 2016. Mainly via the formation of 22,000 community forest groups that act as guardians of local reforestation and restoration projects. Community being the key aspects here. Without the involvement of local people and resources, projects wouldn’t be possible or be suistainable long term. 🍃 #biodiversity #miyawakimethod #rewild #reforestation #afforestation #nature #restoration #ecosystemrestoration #Nepal #ecosystem #forests

Forget a bucket list. This is the bucket. To be able to do something like this on scale with native plants (...Tennessee Valley Authority, USDA Forest Service, Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, North American Land Trust, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration). Sign me up - I'll take the lead on a group or two-thousand. I don't know all that much about this Miyawaki method, but honestly it's kind of hard to go wrong when doing nothing is the worst thing you can do. I know of many who would go all-in for something like this. Do you? I'll go on and get me some acorns with that bucket if you'll give me one. #gonative #rewilding #bucketlist #ecology #nativeplants

The Mi'kmaq are leading a critical conservation effort to save ancient hemlock forests from the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid. In addition to their cultural significance, the hemlocks also play a critical ecological role for the mainland moose, a distinct species that is listed as endangered in Nova Scotia. Mi’kmaq conservation values of Etuaptmumk, or using "two-eyed seeing", combines traditional Indigenous ecological knowledge with western scientific methods, and showcases a sustainable approach to managing environmental challenges. https://bit.ly/456vZF3

Celebrating National Rewilding Day Today marks National Rewilding Day, a time to reflect on the transformative power of rewilding our landscapes. Rewilding, at its core, is a progressive approach to conservation that focuses on letting nature take care of itself, enabling natural processes to shape land and sea, repair damaged ecosystems, and restore degraded landscapes. This year, I had the pleasure of exploring the Knepp Wildland Project Knepp Estate one of the largest rewilding projects in lowland Europe, alongside some of my friends from the On Purpose Cohort On Purpose London. Knepp stands as a beacon of rewilding success, sprawling over 3,500 acres in West Sussex, England. What started as a conventional farming operation has morphed into an extraordinary biodiversity hotspot, thanks to the vision of its owners, Charlie Burrell and Isabella Tree. By stepping back and allowing nature to take the reins, Knepp has become a living laboratory, demonstrating how rewilding can benefit both wildlife and people. Herds of free-roaming cattle, ponies, pigs, and deer have become the architects of the land, creating a mosaic of habitats that support an astonishing variety of life. The project has garnered global attention, attracting conservationists, scientists, and policymakers eager to learn from its success. It demonstrates how rewilding can not only restore biodiversity but also provide ecosystem services like flood mitigation, carbon sequestration, and soil regeneration, offering solutions to some of the most pressing environmental challenges we face today. Our journey with the On Purpose Cohort to Knepp was more than a visit; it was an immersion into the possibilities of a wilder future. As we celebrate National Rewilding Day, let's draw inspiration from Knepp and similar projects around the world. Let's champion the wild, not only for the sake of biodiversity but for the health of our planet and future generations. In embracing the wild, we discover not only the untamed beauty of our world but also the potential for a harmonious coexistence with the natural world. Here's to rewilding, a path forward that rekindles hope, fosters resilience, and renews our sense of wonder in the natural world. A natural world which existed before us and will rekindle itself willingly, if we let it. #Rewilding #Nature #Wildlife #Conservation #Rewild #NatureLovers #Biodiversity #Sustainability #Sustainable #EcoFriendly #SustainableLiving #Environment

As Afognak Alutiiq people, our lands are more than an asset, they are a core part of our cultural legacy. They provide food to feed our families, connections to places with cultural significance, and a reminder of what binds us together as a community. We are honored to work with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service on a project that supports the long-term health of our forests and helps us sustain our subsistence practices. Through this project, trees will be planted across 1,700 acres previously harvested for timber on Afognak Island. The effort also works to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, land erosion, and wildfire risk, while promoting the restoration of plant life and wildlife habitat. How are Kwiakah First Nations establishing a conservation economy on their territory? The Kwiakah First Nation has signed a tripartite agreement with the Province of BC and Interfor to create the new M̓ac̓inuxʷ Special Forest Management Area (SFMA). This will: 🌲Effectively double the level of protection in Kwiakah territory 🌲Create stewardship jobs 🌲 Rebuild knowledge systems 🌲Protect and restore forests to old growth characteristics 🌲Lead to working with the Province to develop new legislative tools and economic instruments to capture the value of a “living tree tenure”, an example being the revenue from carbon storage Last month, Chief Steven Dick said, “We hope that, as this work takes hold, it can also empower other Indigenous communities around the world with innovative and self-determined conservation models to counter-balance extractive industrial systems, protect nature and provide a bold solution to climate change.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ga-uvDA5 Kwiakah First Nation Nature United Interfor BC Parks Foundation Nature Conservancy of Canada/Conservation de la nature Canada MakeWay Bruce Ralston, KC #conservation #indigenousledconservation #conservationfinance #investinnature #IPCAs
