■ Imelda Labbé has been appointed as the new president of the Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (VDIK)! She will now take over from Andre Schmidt, who has guided the association through the transition period since the end of August. ■ During the VDIK annual press conference today, market representatives shared their analysis and forecast for the German passenger car market in 2025. International motor vehicle manufacturers expect around 2.85 million new passenger car registrations for the upcoming year. This anticipated slight increase is primarily driven by strong growth in battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). The confidence in drive technology, economic affordability, and the availability of charging infrastructure will play a crucial role in determining whether consumers are willing and able to transition to climate-neutral drives as quickly as projected for 2025. Ultimately, the number of newly registered battery-electric vehicles next year will largely depend on the existing framework conditions.

We had a great time participating in the #AutoTechShowcase. The mobility industry is not just evolving - it is totally transforming in an unprecedented way. Technology and safety must be deployed in a way that considers user experience in order to be successful in the market. Interacting with the regulators and OEMs themselves provides the opportunity to showcase #Autoliv technology, such as electric seat belts and steering wheel ECUs, while showcasing Autoliv’s commitment to safety, research, and product development. The experience really provides perspective on what features and technologies will likely see implementation next in the market. It’s remarkable how many of the technologies that Autoliv showcased were already in production at high volume, but many participants had never seen them before. #MoreLivesSaved_MoreLifeLived
We held our 2nd annual #AutoTechShowcase this week at Audi Field in DC. What a day! Nearly 20 exhibitors came together to demonstrate breakthrough automotive technology for regulators and policymakers. ICYMI → We showed impaired driving detection technology… camera-based driver monitoring systems… automatic crash response technology… connectivity #tech that prevents collisions with pedestrians and cyclists… rear occupant detection and alert systems… We even had some #EV test drives. That’s me in the yellow – and electric – #McLarenArtura. (I ❤️ my job…) Seriously, this event was part of a dialogue Alliance for Automotive Innovation is leading on auto #safety and a demonstration of our commitment to making sure the U.S. competes and leads on the mega trends transforming the industry: #Automation… #Connectivity… #Electrification. And by the way… this isn’t innovation for innovation’s sake… This is technology that will save lives. It already does. Innovation that will increase access to personal mobility, reduce carbon and make vehicles cleaner. It already is. Thank you to Shailen Bhatt of the Federal Highway Administration for your keynote remarks. And thanks to all our great speakers, sponsors and exhibitors. Mark R. ▶ Even deeper decline for BEVs in #German new-car market - The German new-car market shrank by 6.2% in March, according to the latest data from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA). - This meant that 263,831 units took to the road during the month, according to Autovista24 powertrain calculations. - This was the country’s highest delivery total since August 2023. However, Germany’s year-on-year registration decline follows a wider European trend. - Negative results were also recorded elsewhere in the region, such as #France, #Spain and #Italy. - The result comes off the back of Germany’s best start to a year since 2020. January 2024 saw a particularly strong increase in registrations when compared with the first month of 2023. With new #car markets across #Europe experiencing decline across #March, #Germany was no different. The removal of incentives for battery #ElectricVehicles is clearly still being felt, as the powertrain recorded a year-on-year delivery drop of 28.9% last month, resulting in a 14.1% fall in #Q1 2024. A recent forecast from EV-volumes.com sees the technology taking a 17.7% share of the German market in 2024, down from 18.4% in 2023, and a significant slump from January’s original outlook of 21.2%. Elsewhere, Plug-in #hybrids have seen a positive Q1, with registrations growing by 19.8%. Full and mild hybrids on the other hand took a quarter of the market across the first three months of 2024. Meanwhile, #diesel has had a stronger start to the year than some expected, growing deliveries by 4.1% in Q1 and gaining market share in March. ↘ Germany is losing its position as the leading European market for e-mobility in terms of vehicle volume sold. 🚗 While new BEV registrations in Germany fell by 14% to 81 thousand units, the United Kingdom recorded growth of 11% to 84 thousand BEVs. 🚗France also reported a strong increase of 24% to 80 thousand BEVs. Even if you include PHEVs, the United Kingdom with 127 thousand new registrations is just ahead of Germany with 126 thousand EVs and France with 119 thousand EVs. 2024 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for the European car market. As we approach the end of Q1, we can begin to see which countries are leading the way in the transition to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). Germany, France, and the UK hold the top 3 spots, making up over half of European BEV registrations in January and February. However, France has made the most progress, with a 23% increase in share, overtaking the UK and closing in on Germany. Belgium and the Netherlands hold the 4th and 5th spots, representing 14% of the European BEV volume, with Belgium showing an impressive 66% growth. Meanwhile, Scandinavia continues to dominate the BEV mix stakes, with Norway boasting a remarkable 90% of new car registrations as BEVs. Ireland is also an interesting market to watch, with a 2.4% contribution to European BEV sales in 2024, up from just 1% in 2023. It's partly affected by market seasonality so will be fascinating to see how this evolves. #EV #EuropeanCarMarket #Sustainability

🔋📈The Impact of BEVs on the European Aftermarket Over the Next Ten Years—WESPs first research report is now available, made in collaboration with Arno Onink. This in-depth analysis offers critical insights for stakeholders across the automotive sector: • The European car fleet is projected to reach 311,6 million vehicles by 2030, before slightly declining to 307,6 million by 2035. • Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are set to comprise 24,3% of the fleet by 2035, signalling a significant shift in the market. • Despite lower maintenance needs of BEVs, the aftermarket will see only a 3,8% revenue reduction by 2035. However, profit margins are expected to decline from 38,4% to 34,5%. • The average age of European cars is forecasted to increase from 12,3 years in 2022 to 13,7 years by 2035, presenting both challenges and opportunities. Our report provides strategic recommendations for OEMs, suppliers, service providers, and policymakers navigating these changes.
