Soil pollution in India is a critical issue that significantly impacts the food supply and public health. Recent surveys indicate that 146.8 million hectares of land in India is degraded due to the overuse of chemical fertilizers and improper irrigation practices. The 2019-20 Soil Survey reveals severe deficiencies in essential soil nutrients, which negatively affect crop yields and food safety. According to 2023-24 data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, 67% of soil samples across India are low in nitrogen, while only 4% have high nitrogen levels. Additionally, out of 50 million soil samples from across India, 97% were nitrogen deficient, 85% lacked organic carbon, 83% were deficient in phosphorus, and 71% were low in potassium. This degradation, largely caused by excessive use of chemical fertilizers and poor irrigation practices, reduces crop yields and increases groundwater toxicity, posing serious health risks from contaminated food. My name is Manas Shukla, and I am studying MCom Extension in Business Analytics at UNSW. The data story that I have made is around Soil Pollution in India because I feel it is one of those problems which don't come into the limelight as frequently as it should be. My topic for COMM5501 project is "Soil Degradation in India". The SDG for this context is SDG 2, particularly target 2.4 In term, after studying COMM5501 as a part of my core subjects I can say that this course has definitely impacted my ability to convert raw data into insightful stories. This course has also taught me how providing feedback can have such great impact to the data story. For the self-assessment, I would give myself 8.5 out of 10. Thanks Poon Leung for being such an excellent lecturer. I really liked the way you teach. I would also like to thank my teammates for improving my data story through feedback. Imagine a world where clean water is a rare commodity and basic sanitation is an unattainable dream... Hi everyone. My name is James Hraiki and I am a student at UNSW. One of the courses I completed this term was COMM2501, or Data Visualisation and Communication. For my COMM2501 project, I had to create a Data Story in which I focused on Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation for All). More specifically, completing this project deeply informed me of the harsh realities faced by Niger, where inadequate infrastructure and poor public health systems have resulted in rampant waterborne diseases and high child mortality rates. This topic was particularly eye-opening for me as I learned about how deeply a lack of access to clean water and sanitation can affect a nation - something we definitely take for granted. Throughout this project, I've learned the importance of effective communication and data analysis in advocating for pertinent global issues. Starting this course, I believed my strengths lied in creating data visualisations and working with others, however by its completion, these skills have grown tremendously and I have realised how there is always for improvement. Overall, I am deeply satisfied with the data story I have created on my chosen issue. My self-assessment on my data story is 10/10. You can watch my data story video here: https://lnkd.in/etngKcFm

Worth a read 😎 - Why Nestlé and Waitrose & Partners are investing in Regenerative Agriculture, featuring my fantastic colleague Matthew Ryan. The topic is only becoming more important as a way to both reduce the impact of conventional farming on the journey to net zero and to build farm resilience in the face of a changing climate. Great to see more and more businesses playing their role. #RegenerativeAgriculture #Sustainability Interview: Why Nestlé and Waitrose are investing in regenerative farming (grocerygazette.co.uk)
