Does "Good Nurse" mean the same thing to ourselves, our patients, and our work places? And if not, how are you handling the many responsibilities? Which do you prioritize? Is it best to go home knowing you did all you could do for your patients, and that feels like a good job? Do you need feedback from your patient to know you did well? Is it more important to prioritize what your facility prioritizes? Are these definitions ever in conflict? I'm genuinely curious and feel like it's important to discuss the sometimes conflicting priorities that nurses juggle regularly. The more we can uncover and discuss the complexities of point-of-care nursing and the unspoken rules within the culture, the safer the work and healthcare environments become! Statement from the Care Provider Alliance on the NMC Independent Culture Review The Care Provider Alliance is deeply troubled by the findings of the independent culture review of The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The investigation reveals serious issues in parts of the NMC. Whilst some NMC employees report working in a healthy, supportive environment, others feel trapped in a dangerously toxic culture. There are allegations of discrimination and significant failures in safeguarding and fitness to practise processes. These problems strike at the heart of the NMC's ability to regulate and support nursing professionals. About 33,000 registered nurses work in social care settings. Our sector relies on nurses to provide high-quality clinical care to those with healthcare needs, particularly in care homes but also in community settings. It is therefore crucial we have effective and trustworthy regulators to maintain standards, ensure public safety, drive improvement and, where necessary, enforce regulatory and legal compliance. None of the regulators are inspiring confidence at present. Of particular concern are the substantial backlogs in fitness to practise cases and the potential risks to public safety highlighted in the report. The care sector cannot afford delays or oversights in addressing concerns about nursing practice, as this risks the safety and wellbeing of those we care for. Chair of the Care Provider Alliance, Dr Jane Townson OBE said: “On behalf of the Care Provider Alliance, I urge the NMC to treat this report with the utmost seriousness and to implement its recommendations as a matter of urgency. The regulator must take swift and decisive action to address these deep-rooted issues and rebuild trust with both the nursing profession and the public. Our shared goal must be to ensure that all nurses, including those in social care, are supported by a regulator that upholds the highest standards of professionalism and public protection. Those drawing on care and support deserve nothing less.“ The Care Provider Alliance calls for the NMC to provide clear updates on their progress in implementing these reforms. Recent reforms in aged care have led to employers reducing the number of enrolled nurses, creating a skills gap. This has brought to the fore concerns around delegation of work by registered nurses to unregulated health workers. “Delegation care is a complex decision-making process that required the nurse to use leadership and change management skills to demonstrate assertiveness within the teams they work, advocate for patients and ensure nursing activities are effectively executed”, Dr. Carol Crevacore explains. Answering the question : What does "Good Nurse" mean to you? Thanks Mandy Irby, The Birth Nurse at sparking the conversation When I was a bedside nurse - Good nurse to me, meant providing hollistic care to my patients. It also meant advocating for them and empowering them to self advocate. Unfortunately, I didnt see caring for myself as "good". I thought it was selfish and it led to my somewhat resenting my work over time. As a nurse manager , "Good nurse", means helping my team contribute to creating a positive and healthy workplace by creating systems that foster effective communication and encourage personal wellbeing of staff. Its reminding staff to pace themself and take care of their health. That way they can have a long and rewarding career. Just like in the aeroplane safety briefing : Rather than placing the oxygen mask on the patient first, they put the oxygen mask on themself first. Where does this leave the patient? With good continuity of care and they are cared for in a place where they enjoy being because the environment is healthy and positive. What do you think ?

A recent analysis by the Royal College of Nursing (@RCN), has uncovered a concerning trend: the number of nurses actively planning to leave the UK for better pay and conditions abroad has skyrocketed in recent years, increasing over four-fold between 2018-19 and 2022-23. To address this alarming situation, healthcare providers and advocacy groups are urging the government to take immediate action by boosting nursing salaries with recruitment and retention payments, alongside above inflation pay awards, to recognize the chronic workforce shortages across the UK. These findings, derived from a Freedom of Information request to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), reveal a troubling rise in nurses seeking certificates of current professional status (CCPS) to practice overseas. The numbers have more than doubled from 2021-22 to 2022-23, indicating a growing trend of nurses seeking opportunities abroad due to low pay and poor working conditions at home. 📈 We want to hear from you, nurses!
