"In November of 2021, multiple atmospheric rivers descended on the Sumas prairie and surrounding regions, dumping hundred of millimetres of rain. Cascading effects from rivers to the south flooded the low lying land, which was submerged in water after the unprecedented rainfall. Farms and communities suffered horrific losses, with over 400,000 chickens, 12,000 hogs and 420 dairy cattle who could not be saved from the flood waters, and acres of farmland unable to produce. " Comments by Katie McInnes about the Agricultural Excellence Conference she attended in Abbotsford on November 19-21, sponsored by MWAF. Read the full article at our blog: https://lnkd.in/gFQmw72f

Factory farm pollution is not just a river Wye issue. We've mapped - for the first time - the waste produced by #factoryfarming across the UK and the results are shocking. Here are a few things we learned: 1) This is getting worse. Permission is still being given for more factory farms in the most polluted areas. Better planning policy could prevent this, and we're asking Angela Rayner to make sure the ongoing planning review introduces a presumption against any expansion in polluted catchments (please write to her now: https://lnkd.in/erVNHBdA) 2) This isn't just a River Wye issue. As Tom Tibbits has been saying for yonks, just exporting waste out of the Wye catchment isn't going to solve the problem. (Where will it go...?) 3) The river pollution crisis is largely caused by agriculture. But blaming farmers is sending your mail to the wrong address. Just a handful of agribusinesses are behind the expansion and intensification of UK livestock and raking in the profits from producing this waste. Meanwhile family farmers say they cannot survive the prices, trading terms, and insecurity imposed on them by these supply chains (check out the Riverford Organic Farmers 'Farmwashing' campaign) 4) These maps are *just* pigs and chickens. They don't even include intensive dairy and beef farming, so the slurry and manure problem is actually worse. We must create opportunities for UK farmers to grow healthy and sustainable food. (Some climate transition cash please?) And we need a proper nutrient budget for the UK (as Ellie Roxburgh from Soil Association is proposing) Amazing to collaborate with Compassion in World Farming - Food Business and Friends of the Earth on this work, produced by Materiality. #rivers #riverpollution
