#IWD2024 - Happy International Women’s Day! This IWD, may your call for liberation also include indigenous women, rural women, and ethnic minorities! 🧡🩷 2023 marked the hottest year yet, and 2024 in Thailand has been scorching in comparison to previous years. Under UN Women’s theme of Invest in women: Accelerate Progress, addressing the climate crisis is paramount. Women and girls bear a disproportionate burden of the climate crisis, especially indigenous communities, ethnic minorities, and rural populations who have contributed the least to climate change. Thailand, ranked 9th among countries most affected by climate change, sees its indigenous communities, Isaan ethnic minorities, and rural women bearing the brunt of this crisis. They are at the forefront, advocating for their rights and the preservation of our planet, yet they are also the ones most economically and systematically harmed by policies aimed at mitigating climate change. In Sab Wai Village and Phichit, women are standing up against the government's flawed climate policies, and Thailand's prioritization of profits over its people and natural landscapes. This cycle must end. The women of Sab Wai and Phichit deserve better! This International Women’s Day, let’s rally together to support the women of Sab Wai and Phichit! #SaveSabWaiVillagers from poverty and land evictions! #StopAkara from mining at the Chatree Gold mine, #StopAkara from profiting at the expense of Phichit Villagers! Created during the 4th UN World Conference on Women in Beijing (1995) by a small NGO team, The Women’s World Summit Foundation (WWSF) took the lead to bring the ”International Day of Rural Women - 15 October” into existence by mobilizing development networks, UN agencies, and inviting many Heads of State to take at least one Day per year to look into the crucial role of their rural women and groups feeding communities and families, building strong rural support networks, listen to their needs, and hear about their challenges especially with climate change. In 2007, the UN declared 15 October an official annual UN Day. Did you know… • Rural Women comprise more than one quarter of the total world population. • 500 million women live below the poverty line in rural areas. • Women produce 60-80 % of basic foodstuffs in sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean. • Women perform over 50 % of the labor involved in intensive rice cultivation in Asia. • Women perform 30 % of the agricultural work in industrialized countries. • Women head 60 % of households in some regions of Africa. • Women meet 90 % of household water and fuel needs in Africa. • Women process 100 % of basic household food stuffs in Africa. “ (UNDP) WWSF decided to use the International Day of Rural Women - 15 October to award its annual “Prize for women’s creativity in rural Life” (to-date, 492 laureates in over 130 countries 1994-2024) to raise awareness of the creative and compassionate women leaders and honor their contributions in their local and national development processes, i.e. household food security, safeguarding traditional knowledge, biodiversity, leadership & peacebuilding. “Rural women must co-lead their local and national development in the future. If they don’t, they will remain in the corridors of power forever”. Over 120 women leaders will join together next week for the Asia Women and Rivers Congress! 🌊 Leaders from riverine and #Indigenous communities, civil society, and academia will share knowledge, discuss collaborative strategies to tackle water, energy and #ClimateChange challenges Learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ehP6aRt2 Spotlight on Asia: Water conflict in Asia has largely been between river developers and local communities adversely impacted by development projects. This is increased by the challenges of climate change. In spite of clear linkages between gender, water, energy, and climate change, women’s roles and leadership have not been a significant part of the discourse in #TransboundaryWater management. Women in Asia manage and disproportionately bear the negative impacts of water and energy provisioning fundamental to household and community sustenance needs. Although women have experience, ideas, and knowledge of how to manage these resources, their views are rarely sought at decision-making levels. Understanding the ways in which gender shapes policy over the sustainable management of our natural resources when faced with climate change and the differing needs and positions of women and men, is crucial to addressing poverty and ensuring sustainability. #WomenandRiversCongress #WomenandRivers #RiverGuardians #RiverDefenders #WomeninWaterGovernance #WaterIsLife #IndigenousRights #HumanRights #WomenRights #WomensRights #GenderEquity #WomenSupportingWomen #EnvironmentalJustice Open Development Cambodia Organization Oxfam Oxfam in Asia Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund Sida Synchronicity Earth Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH GIZ Thailand Simavi

This International Day of Rural Women, Soorty Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. celebrates women like Shamim, a resilient farmer from the Soorty Regenagri Initiative, who embodies strength and perseverance. Shamim not only manages her farm independently but also ensures her children receive an education while contributing to the growth of her community. This year's International Rural Women's Day theme celebrates women as key drivers of sustainability, climate resilience, and community development. Shamim’s journey highlights the critical role rural women play and proves that when women thrive, communities thrive. Shamim balances her role as a mother and farmer, working independently to cultivate cotton, lentils, barley, and vegetables while also caring for her children. With Soorty’s support, she is improving her farming practices whilst providing for her family. "Those who say women can’t work are wrong," she says proudly, as she challenges societal norms and invests in her children’s education. In rural areas, practical steps like providing market access or equipment are important, but true, lasting change will only come when women can make independent decisions, without being constrained by traditional gender roles or societal expectations. Shamim's experience is a powerful reminder to rethink how we empower women in rural communities. Together, we can build a more equitable future! #InternationalRuralWomensDay #EmpowerWomen #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateAction #SoortyEnterprises #GenderEquality #WomenInAgriculture #Biodiversity United Nations Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH GIZ Pakistan Oxfam International International Labour Organization UNDP Organic Cotton Accelerator REEDS Pakistan

On this #InternationalDayofRuralWomen, let's shine a light on the incredible contributions of Rural women in Southeast Asia. They form the backbone of their communities, playing a vital role in agriculture, food security, and natural resource management. Yet, they face immense challenges: limited resources, heavy workloads, and the brunt of crises. The Sab Wai community in Thailand is just one example of their struggles. 🌍 Today we celebrate International Day of Rural Women — a day to honor the strength, resilience, and contributions of women who live and work in rural communities around the world. As women in the rural sector, we've seen firsthand how women drive sustainable change in agriculture, local economies, and environmental stewardship. Women in rural areas are often the backbone of these communities, ensuring food security, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering biodiversity. We're constantly inspired by the vital role rural women play, not just in farming but also in shaping a more sustainable future. Empowering them with resources, education, and opportunities isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s essential for global development. We are proud to see organizations like the Tourist Board of the Republic of Srpska and Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Srpska making a real difference. Their commitment to supporting rural women ensures that female voices are uplifted, empowering them to lead sustainable practices and drive local economic development. We are proud to be a part of the #SMARTERAeu, EU-funded project which aims to empower rural communities for a sustainable transition and foster cooperation across European regions by implementing smart solutions through Smart Innovation Packages, co-created with local communities. Today, let’s recognize their invaluable work and advocate for more support, investment, and recognition for women in rural areas everywhere. Together, we can build a more inclusive and sustainable future. 🐝🌱💪 #InternationalDayOfRuralWomen #RuralWomen #SustainableAgriculture #FemaleEmpowerment #WomenInAgriculture #RuralDevelopment #Sustainability

Inauguration of World Social Forum 2024 was held in Nepal today, bringing together over 10,000 individuals from diverse communities worldwide. This event, which will take place from todays onto Feb 19, 2024, will be centered around the theme "Another World is Possible." The forum aims to foster discussions, collaborations, and visions for a more just and equitable world, addressing contemporary challenges such as environmental crises, rising inequality, and the threat of future pandemics. World Social Forum: The World Social Forum (WSF) is a global platform for civil society, originating in Brazil in 2001, and has since grown to include tens of thousands of participants engaged in over a thousand events annually. The WSF emphasizes the importance of sustainability, dignity, co-existence, equality, and peace, and it is a response to the various crises resulting from the contradictions and limitations of globalization. The forum is not a body representing world civil society but rather a process that encourages organizations and movements to situate their actions from the local to the international level as issues of planetary citizenship. The WSF is a plural, diversified, non-confessional, non-governmental, and non-party context that interrelates organizations and movements engaged in concrete action to build alternatives to neoliberalism and the domination of the world by capital. The World Social Forum is a permanent process of seeking and building alternatives, which cannot be reduced to the events supporting it. The forum is a world process, with all meetings having an international dimension, and it stands in opposition to a process of globalization commanded by large corporations and governments with the complicity of national governments. https://lnkd.in/gKUC2zy4 #WorldSocialForum2024 #wsf2024nepal #ngo #betterlifefoundation #nepal #kathmandu #india #kerala #kasaragod #mohandasvayalamkuzhy
