3 years ago (plus 3 days) we placed 2nd in @plymouthcc #backthefuture #climatechange competition This was just 3 weeks after launching a @crowdfunderuk campaign and raising over £2,000 in donations. We had also done a minor thing of setting up a private limited company from scratch, completely independently. Placing second we were awarded our first project and an additional £12,500 to make the project happen. We went to work & delivered 12 events focussed on enhancing sustainable cycling in #plymouth and the #devon area. We delivered above required by filming a road safety video with @city___bus @plymouthcitybus and supported a local mountain biking charity with fundraising & awareness. 3 years on we’re still battling to establish ourselves, now more than ever as a full time business. It’s a real challenge but we are passionate about what we do and just hope we can win some substantial work & continue to help people & planet in the process. Joe Creasey takes on the London Marathon 2025 is a done deal..   So before we get into the post I'm going to drop the link you are waiting for: https://lnkd.in/eggiH6WG   So where do we start? The beginning makes sense right? Last year I was asked to be a part of the Gaming Board at Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity or GOSH as some of you may know them, and since then I have worked with the amazing people over there and an amazing group of friends to help raise money and support the children and families that are associated with GOSH.   In a call one day the opportunity to run the marathon was spoken about and how I could potentially help the lives of other families and children just by running (a long way i must add…), and if you know me, you will know I have a little girl of my own, that I could speak about all day long and while speaking about her my face will always have the biggest grin across it. Yes, I'm one of the dads that never shuts up about their kid, but I wouldn't have it any other way :D   I just exposed my weakness, I will do anything to support kids and their families, as I know first-hand what it’s like to have a child in your family who is ill and what type of damage this can do to everyone involved. No one should ever have to deal with the darkness that can come with having a sick child and let alone go through it with no one by their side, which is why I'm so passionate about the amazing work GOSH does.   Fast forward a few weeks/months I now have a place in the London 2025 Marathon 😶 scary but also exciting. So what’s the plan?   Over the next 8 months I will be creating content across my social media platforms and sharing my progress (I will try and be as consistent as possible). What can you expect? My training but also my story as to why I'm taking on this mammoth challenge. I will also share the time I aim to beat, so keep any eye out.     During this time, I will set benchmarks of donation goals but I will also need your help with this... for every £500 raised we will add a forfeit, this could be anything from dyeing my hair, shaving my hair, or even a choice of outfits for me to run in. Taking a Pit Stop: Detoxing from Work and Racing for a Cause 🏎️💨 Last year, I swapped my desk for a helmet and race suit jumping into a solo 2-hour endurance go-kart race for charity. It was an unforgettable experience - exhilarating, challenging, tiring and exactly what I needed to hit the reset button. When people ask if I won, I have to laugh - I had no chance! I was up against a Hamilton (not that Hamilton, but close enough! Nicholas is still a GOAT). Still, the real victory was raising funds for a cause close to my heart and reminding myself how important it is to step back from the grind. This year, I’m lining up another race for September, and I can’t wait to do it all over again. These moments of pure fun and excitement, especially when tied to giving back, are the perfect antidote to burnout. They help me recharge, refocus, and return to work sharper and more motivated. So here’s my challenge to you: What’s your version of this? Whether it’s hiking, playing football, cycling, volunteering, or just taking time for something you love, make it happen. Find something that excites you, pushes you, and makes a positive impact—you’ll thank yourself later. For the past 8 years, I've spent my spare time working on this little charity, EkeRua ReBicycle. Except it's not so little anymore. Somehow it got quite big. From a few bikes in our garage and a few friends helping fix them up, we've grown to having 3 containers full of bikes, a full workshop, and a team of contractors and volunteers running up to 4 fix ups and training sessions a week. We've supported two other workshops in the region to get firmly established - shout out to Motuhenga and Free Ride. And most importantly, we've given out over 2500 bikes to people who need and wanted them. And we've done all this mostly with volunteer time. I always say, whatever the problem, the solution is a bike. Save money, improve your health, your mental well-being, lower carbon emissions, make or see friends, get to work or school, increase confidence and independence. Bikes are a multi-tool for our community well-being. But this important mahi needs funding to run it. Shoestring budgets don't pay staff bills or replace tools and parts. So we're asking for help. We want to raise $10 for every bike we've given out so far - that's $25000 - to help cover costs of our new workshop and to keep our fix ups going over winter. Can you help us? Before we talk about the weather, how AMAZING is it to see the UK on the same bit of chart! 🤩 • With just under 800 nautical miles left to row it's still much too early to make any solid predictions on a landing date. A purely mathematical equation based upon his speed and distance since the start would get him to land on the 23rd August, but that has included some time on para-anchor. And whilst we have little idea what mother nature has planned for Tom for the rest of the journey, we have all of our fingers and toes crossed that it will be para-anchor free and helpful winds for the remainder, so it's possible he could land considerably earlier than that. 🙌 • We can see on this image that the weather system that blew through yesterday has mostly passed - he's now in the yellowy green bit which is much lighter in speed.👍 • However there is another weather system coming in, which looks like it will peak on Saturday night into Sunday morning - it's a similar pace to the one he's just experienced, but it will be in the dead of night. In some ways this is good, because the worst of it is when Tom isn't rowing anyway. There's an old saying that goes like "if you want to change yourself, dare what you have never dared before.” It's with this spirit that, on 27th April, I will be taking part in the 'Race Around The Netherlands' (https://lnkd.in/dVGngjUi) - the most challenging bike race in the Netherlands. It's a fully self-supported bike race over 1,900 km, a part of the challenge is for the individual biker to come up with their own strategy for tackling logistics around arranging accommodation, planning breaks, food and even sleep. In a nutshell, it's a bikepacking competition. I take this challenge for many reasons; one of them is that I believe we have undiscovered physical and mental capacities but we don’t use them because we are surrounded by barriers we do not see. Break those barriers and you’ll find your real self. Another reason I do this is for a cause. I strongly believe that change can be brought about only with personal commitment and collective involvement. We'll precursor this by saying that Tom is fine, and continuing on his journey, but as the video caption says; Tom has capsized. 😱 • This was 100% prepared for, in fact it was expected...that didn't make it any less scary though. 😨 • A capsize in an ocean rowing boat is a violent affair, it takes an ENORMOUS force to roll one of these boats, but the Atlantic has no limits as far as strength is concerned, and when a large powerful wave hit him sideways on, it flipped him over like it was nothing. 🔁 • The boat immediately self-righted, as it's designed to do (as we've talked about before). Tom was inside the boat at the time sealed in, and safe. • He lost his EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon - his big red button in case of emergency) but he has a spare one of them. He lost a water container, but he has several spares of these. And he damaged his aerials, which he has since fixed.
