Last week marked my one-year anniversary at DFG Ventures after a beautiful and fulfilling time with Whole Foods Market. Many of the conversations I am having lately are around how my transition out of retail and into venture has been, so I figured why not share some of my thoughts here! One thing I can say for sure (I feel like Oprah here) is that change can seem scary, but the opposite is scarier! Do what you love. It may seem oversimplified, but once you truly get clear on what it is that makes you proud and excited, you are headed in the right direction. We often chase a promotion, a title, or  comp and forget what lights us up. Getting clear on what the things were that made me feel successful and happy was pivotal in shifting gears in my career. 10 out of 10 recommend! Don’t be an @sshole. Throughout my time at WFM, I prioritized relationships. Brands, brokers, team members, distributors, colleagues – it didn’t matter who you were, I wanted to make sure you felt heard and respected throughout our interactions. Through this, I was able to create an authentic network of colleagues and friends who have become invaluable resources in my Venture adventure! Alyssa Vescio Craig Dubitsky Mike Schall Matt Matros Elly Truesdell Robyn Lawrie Rutledge among many others! Never stop learning. Lets face it, we all get a little stagnant, so jumping into something new and scary can sometimes be the best thing professionally. I loved the founders and companies I was able to support on my journey at Whole Foods, and now, I am on the other side of the business, building it!  Along those lines, something that we talk a lot about at DFG is “Learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist” Pablo Picasso. This couldn’t be more true as we look to build brands to last. Big or small. Startup or a behemoth. Venture or Grocery store. One thing remains a constant - Data is QUEEN. Innovation without commercialization is only half the story🧠➡️💼 Check out the insights from our board member, Roger Wüthrich-Hasenböhler of Deep Tech Nation Switzerland   Switzerland consistently ranks as one of the most innovative countries in the world, but we often miss the mark when it comes to scaling and commercializing our own innovations. Too often, technologies born here are commercialized elsewhere, leading to missed opportunities for job creation and value generation in our own economy. An example? The LCD technology we all know, which originated in Baden, but wasn’t scaled here. Instead, others, particularly in the U.S., recognized its potential and capitalized on it. 🔑 We must do more to ensure that our innovations are commercialized, monetized, and scaled from within Switzerland. This means ensuring that, as startups grow, they receive the right support and investment locally. Not only does this keep jobs here, but it also ensures that the value created from Swiss innovation stays in Switzerland. When a startup moves into its second round and wants to scale internationally, the lead investor must come from Switzerland. Company Highlights: - Raised a 3X oversubscribed seed round ($7.5M) - 4X team growth (4 to 16 FTE) - 19.5X user growth Learnings: - The narrative around AI for VCs and startups is changing so quickly that your AI strategy in the pitch will need to evolve almost daily during your fundraise. Get it right and you'll be rewarded. - Venture studios (Open Core Ventures in our case) can deliver on de-risking startups at seed stage, especially paired with a popular open source project. However, follow on financing for a venture studio built company is challenging for many VCs who don’t fully understand the model.  - Open source + AI + PLG is a winning strategy today for fundraising and startup success when done well. Execution is everything.

This article presents a comprehensive framework that introduces three distinct branches of entrepreneurship science: private, academic, and public entrepreneurship. Each branch focuses on a unique form of artificial creation and employs execution models for different objectives, including profit generation, problem-solving, and sustainable growth. By exploring these branches, this paper aims to elevate entrepreneurship into a structured, repeatable scientific process. Introduction: Entrepreneurship has traditionally been seen as a set of practices and skills centered on starting businesses and making a profit. However, as society evolves, so does our understanding of entrepreneurship’s role in different sectors, including private businesses, academia, and the public sector. This paper proposes a new framework called entrepreneurship science, which treats entrepreneurship as a systematic body of knowledge focused on artificial creation and its execution. The purpose of this article is to outline this new scientific approach, dividing entrepreneurship into three branches—private entrepreneurship, academic entrepreneurship, and public entrepreneurship—each focusing on a unique form of artificial creation, from goods and services to knowledge and public policies.
