It's #InternationalCatDay - the perfect time to learn about the RIBA crest, featuring two #lions This image was inspired by the Lion Gate entrance to Mycenae, built in the 13th Century, and one of the great #architectural monuments of ancient Greece. These powerful creatures represent #strength and #authority, while the motto reads Usui civium decori urbium which translates as "For the use of the people, for the glory of the city". There is debate as to whether the original #sculpture actually shows lionesses, who in fact do most of the hunting and caring for their young, so may be the more prudent guardians of a #city or #institution. Only qualified Architects who sign up to RIBA's charter are allowed to use this logo, demonstrating their commitment to the highest #standard of #professional and #ethical practice.
