I would really like to see this happening in Accra, instead of the reverse. It hurts my heart to see the wanton cutting down of urban trees by all kinds of people for no good reason. These trees were planned and planted, and provide vital resources: cooling, shade, cleaning of the air and beautification of the environment. I know so many people who are bothered by this and yet no one seems to be able to do anything about it. Giffard Road from Cantonments to the 37 Circle has been turned into an arid, baking concrete mess, with the magnificent neem trees that used to line it decimated for no apparent reason. Trees like that take decades to grow...and no, replacing them with stunted palms is not the way. The more concrete, the more heat, the more flooding, and the less comfortable our city is for all of us- but especially those who don't have a choice but to walk hours every day in the blazing sun. I think it is time we begin to pay very serious attention to political aspirants and what they have to say about our environment, and not just about galamsey. Our environment is where we live. Anyone cutting down these essential urban trees without a VERY good reason or engaging in other outrageously destructive environmental practices should be prosecuted-whoever they are. It is time for a sea change.
