I’m now five weeks into my new job at the NEC Group and I’ve been loving learning all about our venues, with a particular focus on the beautiful city-centre venue The ICC Birmingham. Put very simply, my job is to promote not just our venues but also Birmingham as the ideal destination to host any kind of event. So, this is what I have learned: Quite simply, Birmingham is awesome. I knew that already as a Brummie but I think everyone else should too! It welcomes over 1 million international visitors each year and has a booming economy. What’s more, its central location and excellent transport links make it incredibly accessible by air, rail or car – in fact 90% of the UK’s population live within a four-hour drive of Birmingham! As for the ICC itself, it’s considered to be one of Europe’s premier conference venues and has flexible space to accommodate from 10 to 2,000+ delegates. Plus, the location is unbeatable with stunning canal views, vibrant bars and restaurants right next door, and get this: award-winning catering (think fresh, local, and seriously delicious - over 650 awards can't be wrong!). 80% of the food is sourced from local suppliers meaning it is not only fresh but environmentally friendly. What do great events have in common, Temi? As I reflect on numerous successful events that I’ve had the privilege to MC over the past decade—from Presidential events and Ministerial functions to international seminars, private-sector conferences, award dinners, book launches, weddings, and more—I recognize some factors that transform an event from good to great. Today, I’ll highlight one of them: a sense of belonging. Great events foster a sense of belonging for everyone, creating an environment where every attendee feels valued and appreciated. Personally, I’ve witnessed audiences come alive and actively engage simply because they feel that they belong. This doesn’t happen by accident. The energy and tone set by the MC are crucial, ensuring that everyone feels recognized and valued, turning a good event into an extraordinary one.
