The new Copernicus Climate Atlas is an amazing tool for do-it-yourself climate forecasting. Far more powerful than anything most people have had (free) access to before. I recently spent quite a bit of time with the Climate Atlas, and even found a significant bug in the software (what were the odds! 😂). Happily the Copernicus team moved quickly to fix the problem. Because it is such a powerful tool that anyone can quickly learn to use, I've added a "Copernicus Climate Atlas Mini-Course" to our Climate Change Toolbox, walking through how to start using the Atlas (which I know can seem a bit intimidating at first). I've exported that Mini-Course as a PDF, which is what is attached below. Feedback and suggestions welcome!

The impact of climate change is most acute at Earth’s polar regions. The Arctic and Antarctica are warming rapidly, with dramatic consequences for not only the local environment, but the wider world. See examples of EU-funded projects, studying polar regions, climate change and the ocean-climate-cryosphere nexus, closing important gaps linked to understanding, modelling and predicting the vulnerable components of Earth’s climate system and the biosphere. https://lnkd.in/et6NUJ_a

Is it worse to have no climate solutions – or to have them but refuse to use them? Rebecca Solnit Tech barons are forever predicting some amazing new technology to fix the climate crisis. Yet fixes already exist There are so many ways to fiddle while Rome burns, or as this season’s weather would have it, gets torn apart by hurricanes and tornadoes and also goes underwater – and, in other places, burns. One particularly pernicious way comes from the men in love with big tech, who are forever insisting that we need some amazing new technology to solve our problems, be it geoengineering, carbon sequestration or fusion – but wait, it gets worse. 🌐 The Destination Earth initiative addresses climate change by utilizing detailed modeling of the Earth system and LUMI's vast computing capabilities. Jenni Kontkanen, Development Manager at CSC - IT Center for Science, discusses DestinE and the Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin project in a recent Hewlett Packard Enterprise case study. The idea behind the Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin is to combine high‑resolution climate simulations with impact models. These impact models assess the effects of climate change, providing climate information crucial for decision‑making. This includes evaluating risks such as floods or wildfires in specific regions, estimating wind resources, and understanding how heat waves affect humans. "It will improve our scientific understanding and inform decision‑making for more effective environmental, climate mitigation, and adaptation strategies", says Kontkanen. ➡️ Read the story: https://lnkd.in/dHdVwn2S #lumisupercomputer #eurohpc #digitaltwins European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts

It’s quite likely the fires in LA are driven by climate change like other increasing extreme events. Unfortunately, the incoming POTUS doesn’t believe in Science and is likely to exit the Global Climate Accord. The Global Climate Highlights 2024 report is online. The year 2024 was the warmest on record globally, with an average global temperature of 1.6ºC above the pre-industrial average. It was the first calendar year with a global average temperature exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial level.
