For the festival in April this year, we had over 2,000 sign-ups for 80+ sessions hosted by groups ranging from small local community based organisations to large global NGOs. Here’s why we stand out: 🍊 Delegates to the Skoll World Forum use Marmalade as an opportunity to host their own events as part of a wider ecosystem. 🍊 Others from around the world, who are not delegates, come to pick up on energy generated by the Forum. 🍊 Local and national UK organisations use Marmalade as a platform to share their thinking and connect with a global audience. The festival, which spreads across Oxford, is managed by The Old Fire Station, Oxford; all logistics from event management to catering, and comms to customer service. As an arts centre, we encourage participation, creativity and enjoyment. The issues are serious but can only be addressed in an atmosphere of optimism and joy. Marmalade Festival is free to attend, though donations are welcome. We can’t wait to learn, connect and develop with you again in April 2025. As the dust settles on the 2024 IIBA SoftEd Festival of Business Analysis I'm left contemplating what we achieved this year: We blew through for the first time not just 900, 1000, but 1100 total attendees. We had 1148 total attendees overall, with 216 online and over 200 in NZ alone. As part of these figures we were so close to 1,000 for the first time in terms of Australian Face to Face combined with online attendees with that number being 944. These numbers confirm the 2024 IIBA SoftEd Festival of Business Analysis as the biggest conference for Business Analysis in the world. Covering Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Auckland and Wellington - that probably also applies to geographic range as well. So what's next? Well I'm glad you asked. If you caught the talk by Garrie Irons and myself in the online program you will know that doing things early (especially putting the program together) is a large part of the secret to our success this year. We won't be having a break from FoBA 2025 organising and will look to have speaker EOIs out well before this side of Christmas. So watch this space! The other "duh" success factor is have a program you know will be of interest and is of direct value to BAs in their working lives. So I'm interested to know - tell me what was your single favourite part of FoBA2024 in whatever aspect, speakers, venues, timing, catering whatever and if you attended remember to fill in your FoBA survey which will now be eagerly awaiting your response in your inbox. And I'm thinking having a naming rights sponsor for the first time - (thankyou SoftEd Skills Development Group ) is probably also a big part of the mix. Finally are you interested in helping out with next year's FoBA 2025? The demands for organising this Festival will only get bigger over time. You can volunteer either at the Branch level - or this year we will be calling out for volunteers to support activities at the Board level. Interested? Either reach out to me or Abi Sachithanantham and fill in a volunteer EOI form at https://lnkd.in/gytv77Ba . Indicate if your interested in helping a particular branch event or at the board level. It’s time to make some fireworks! and change how we think about our association products and services portfolios, and who we think of as customers. Traditionally associations supply knowledge and community in return for a membership. Membership is topped up by sponsorship revenues for events. We think of our members as our primary source of revenue and corporate sponsorship as a secondary source. Today we’ve worked out that membership is falling so we need to refocus on the corporates and what we call non-dues revenue. Along with this we’re trying to charge individuals for products that used to be part of our membership packages. BUT here’s an idea… Let’s look at everyone that we touch, that includes everyone that comes to the conference and aren’t members, all the partners we have in our ecosystems, including corporates, government, other non-profits, education - everyone. Now let’s look at what our product portfolio looks like. Take everything that we produce, resell and offer - everything. Next let’s focus on doing 2 things….. First - how can we expand the people and entities that we touch. Second - take a critical look at our portfolios and stop doing all the stuff we’ve always done but doesn’t move us or our customers forward. There’s a lot of this. Historical and vanity projects. Also we have to look at our ecosystem and ask the difficult question….Whats keeping them up at night and how can we do something different to help solve these problems in a way they can’t themselves alone. How can we bring the right people together to solve problems themselves, or to learn something from one another, introduce something so new that everyone sits up and listen and sees us as an essential partner. 🌍If you want to talk this idea over, get in touch. I’d love to lead your organization through its renaissance, focusing on raising its value within its ecosystem and bringing lasting change to our ecosystems and increasing our impact on the world. Globally, whenever a new public project is launched for public consumption, it has been a trend that an inauguration party funded by taxpayers' money is held. This is a complete waste of taxpayers' money, and large celebrations can be held with the help of free social media platforms. ........... The age-old debate about the use of taxpayer money for inauguration parties and other celebratory events. One raises a valid point that such events can be seen as a waste of public funds, especially when there are more cost-effective alternatives available. Here are some arguments for and against the use of taxpayer money for inauguration parties: **Arguments against:** 1. **Waste of public funds**: As you mentioned, inauguration parties can be expensive, and the cost is borne by taxpayers. This money could be better spent on essential public services or infrastructure projects. 2. **Lack of transparency**: The cost of these events is often not transparent, making it difficult for citizens to know how their money is being spent. 3. **Alternative platforms**: With the rise of social media, it's possible to hold virtual celebrations and reach a wider audience without incurring significant costs. **Arguments for:** 1. **Community engagement**: Inauguration parties can serve as a way to engage with the community, promote the project, and build excitement around its launch. 2. **Economic benefits**: Large events can generate revenue for local businesses, such as catering, hospitality, and tourism. 3. **Symbolic significance**: Inauguration parties can be seen as a way to mark the completion of a project and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of those involved. **Potential solutions:** 1. **Virtual celebrations**: Consider holding virtual inauguration parties or live streams to reduce costs and reach a wider audience. 2. **Private funding**: Explore private funding options or sponsorships to support the event, reducing the burden on taxpayers. 3. **Low-key events**: Opt for low-key events or simple ceremonies that still mark the occasion without incurring significant costs. Ultimately, the decision to hold an inauguration party and how to fund it should be based on a careful consideration of the costs and benefits. By weighing the pros and cons and exploring alternative options, governments and project organizers can make more informed decisions about how to allocate public funds.

There's been a lot of unfortunate misinformation going around about festival donations, so some of the Chicago chambers of commerce got together to clear the air. So the question is, where do those donations REALLY go? Spoiler alert, it’s NOT the city! Q: Who puts on a street festival? We do! Organizations like your local chambers of commerce! Q: What is a chamber of commerce? People are surprised to learn that a chamber of commerce isn’t a government organization. We’re actually nonprofits run by small teams, our whole purpose is to support our neighborhoods, uplift our businesses, provide services for our residents, and entertainment for everyone. Q: Ok, so where does the money go?! A festival is more than just a party, it’s a fundraiser. We apply for non-profit grants, but these festivals, besides being an absolute blast, are also our biggest fundraiser. Think of it like our annual gala but with a super casual dress code and better music. All our events, neighborhood clean up, resources for business owners like masterclasses and trainings, and non-profit benefits all rely on your donations. Q: But it’s free public property right? You’re right! It is public property, and whether you donate or not, we welcome you in to enjoy the festivities, but closing down the streets and paying for entertainment is expensive! Q: It’s fine if I don’t donate though cause someone else will right? Again, we welcome you in, but as of 2023, we’ve found that less than 50% of festival attendees donate. Q: So what now? We’re not gonna lie, planning these festivals is a huge and difficult endeavor, but we can also genuinely say that we love it. Despite all the hurdles; discovering a new artisan, seeing faces light up during drag queen story times, or that first great bite of that Chicago dog makes it all worth it.
