What a year. And coauthor studio turned it with the highlights. Namely one highlight that was the European Animal Research Association (EARA) #PatientDiscovery project, now with Inês Serrenho! Can’t wait for the 2025 expansion. #LinkedInRewind "Please, keep doing your research, we really need it." These words from a diabetes patient to a researcher captured everything about 2024: the power of direct dialogue between science and society. This year proved that transparency isn't just about sharing information - it's about creating spaces where patients and researchers can connect, learn from each other, and build mutual understanding. The DUC schema offers a structured way to collect and standardize information, while the set of common use condition elements ensures consistency and clarity. Following up on our recent Botanic Tonics research announcement, I'm excited to share the full publication of our landmark safety study in the peer-reviewed journal Cureus Journal of Medical Science. This research applies rigorous scientific validation to what generations of botanical wisdom have long suggested. This first-ever comprehensive clinical trial examining a kava and kratom combination product brings modern scientific scrutiny to traditional knowledge. A recent meeting in New York on the growing crisis in #AntibioticResistance has prompted some press coverage (e.g. https://lnkd.in/eTE9kt4D). This is an issue that has concerned me for more than 30 years, including when I wrote to the UK's Chief Vet to raise my concerns about the agricultural use of compounds very similar to antibiotics used in human medicine. He sent me a letter, now sadly lost, which essentially said "There, there dear, we know what we are doing". About five years ago, my colleague Salvador Macip and I were invited to write a book (our second joint project) on contemporary issues in biomedicine and we included a chapter with background to the #AntibioticCrisis. That project became Viurem per sempre?: Com la biomedicina ens està canviant la vida (Will we live forever?: How biomedicine is changing our lives) https://lnkd.in/e2Jpqa75 With spectacularly bad timing, the book was published at the start of February 2020... just when the world went into lockdown. This was not the only difficulty it faced - the format was slightly quirky: a series of conversations between a medic and his researcher friend about #Bioethics questions emerging from events in their lives. It was an attempt at addressing these topics via the Socratic Method (inspired, in part, by the success of Sophie's World twenty years earlier). This made it tricky to pigeonhole. Coupled with this, the scale of the pandemic itself would have necessitated major rewrites, which we didn't have the time to carry out. As a result, you won't find a full edition in English. We did, however, release two chapters free via Figshare. One of them was the chapter on Antibiotic Resistance, "Stop Bugging Me: Challenging the spectre of antibiotic resistance". *New contract opportunities!* In Discovery Research at the Wellcome Trust we're interested how we support access to and use of the resources on which cutting edge health-related research relies. As with all fields, humanities and social sciences research relies on varied underpinning resources, which are not static but need to grow and change, reflecting technological development and societal changes. We've identified two areas which offer great potential for future health-related discovery research, but where there are clear challenges in terms of the capabilities required to make full use of those resources: - Archive, manuscript and material culture resources (for example, the papers of individual scientists; and archaeological and anthropological artefacts) - New forms of social data or ‘smart data’ (those data generated through engagement with digital systems, devices, and sensors) There are already significant steps being made to enhance the infrastructure for research use of these data which needs better mapping and understanding in terms of the potential for health-related discovery research. We want to understand what exists currently, as well as importantly the gaps in capabilities and the future opportunities for research should those gaps be addressed. We're therefore commissioning two comprehensive landscape reports in these areas. Last week I was honoured to be invited as expert to discuss the findings of a study focusing on AMR interventions in Latin America performed by researchers from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia with the support of The International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) Excited to see how research priorities lead to comprehensive interventions for Latin American countries, especially on the environmental dimensions. https://lnkd.in/ekvbRqXu
