🌐 Meet Us at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference Next Week! 🌐 We're excited to be part of the IAEA's annual conference, where Fusion Energy will be a key focus. Join us at the UK Atomic Energy Authority-hosted side event, "Towards a Global Regulatory Approach for Fusion Safety and Security," on Wednesday, September 18. Our Safety Manager, Alejandra Cuesta Morales, will be speaking on the panel to discuss important fusion safety and security considerations and the role the IAEA could play in establishing international standards. If you'll be in Vienna next week, we'd love to connect—please reach out! #IAEAGeneralConference #FusionEnergy #SafetyAndSecurity #UKAEA

The Statute of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was approved on 23 October 1956 by the Conference on the Statute of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which was held at the Headquarters of the United Nations. It came into force on 29 July 1957. ARTICLE I: Establishment of the Agency The Parties hereto establish an International Atomic Energy Agency (hereinafter referred to as "the Agency") upon the terms and conditions hereinafter set forth. ARTICLE II: Objectives The Agency shall seek to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity throughout the world. It shall ensure, so far as it is able, that assistance provided by it or at its request or under its supervision or control is not used in such a way as to further any military purpose. IAEA Statute - ARTICLE III: Functions A. The Agency is authorized: … 5. To establish and administer safeguards designed to ensure that special fissionable and other materials, services, equipment, facilities, and information made available by the Agency or at its request or under its supervision or control are not used in such a way as to further any military purpose; and to apply safeguards, at the request of the parties, to any bilateral or multilateral arrangement, or at the request of a State, to any of that State's activities in the field of atomic energy; … One key point in the statute that I want to highlight is that the assistance "...made available by the Agency or at its request or under its supervision or control are not used in such a way as to further any military purpose".

Brianna Lazerwitz I am excited to share my experience attending the Strategic Energy Planning for Net Zero: Harnessing IAEA Tools for Tailored Solutions workshop represented by Brianna Lazerwitz This event offered a unique opportunity to dive deep into innovative strategies aimed at achieving net-zero emissions within our energy systems. The workshop provided comprehensive insights into how the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) tools can be effectively utilized to design customized energy solutions that align with national and regional objectives. Engaging with experts and fellow participants allowed for rich discussions on best practices, challenges, and opportunities in strategic energy planning. Our team name was Enola and our task was to reduce the Carbon dioxide emissions and at the same time maintain the full capacity of electricity required suggesting different energy solutions. Understanding the intersection of energy planning and sustainability is crucial in our efforts to combat climate change. I am excited to apply the knowledge and tools gained from this workshop to contribute to effective energy policies that promote a sustainable future. #EnergyPlanning #NetZero #IAEATools #Sustainability #Workshop #ClimateAction International Youth Nuclear Congress (IYNC)

Across the world, we see considerable progress in the recycling and disposing of nuclear fuel after it has been used to generate power. Spent fuel retains more than 90% of its potential energy even after 5 years of use in a nuclear power reactor. The International Conference on the Management of Spent Fuel from Nuclear Power Reactors #SFM24 taking place at the IAEA this week will facilitate discussions on national strategies for managing spent fuel, including from advanced technologies such as small modular reactors #SMRs, and how this supports an increased role for nuclear power in the global energy mix. Final "milestone" JET results due out tomorrow before the UK turns its attention to STEP, and the "quest" to build the world’s first fusion power plant. Under the government’s current timeline, the STEP machine will not start operating until the early 2040s. But environmental and political urgency could bring that forward, reports today's Financial Times. “We’re going to look very closely at the opportunity to accelerate the progress,” said Professor David Gann CBE, inaugural chair of UK Industrial Fusion Solutions, the government body responsible for delivering the plant. STEP is a UK Atomic Energy Authority programme that will demonstrate the ability to generate net electricity from fusion. It will be a spherical tokamak with high temperature superconductor magnets, connected to the National Grid and producing net energy. #FusionforAll #fusioniscoming #fusionenergy

Have you ever wondered what's going on inside the Sun? UKAEA's Leah Morgan explains... Bringing the power source of the stars down to Earth could give us low-carbon electricity for millennia to come. Fusion energy is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner energy the world badly needs. Scientists and engineers at the UK Atomic Energy Authority are developing the technology to bring fusion to the grid.

In a last sign of life, the Joint European Torus (JET) facility smashed the record for generating energy through #fusion, producing "69 megajoules for five seconds using 0.2 milligrams of fuel, beating its previous record set in 2022 by 10 megajoule" as announced by the UK Atomic Energy Authority. The energy is enough to power 41.000 homes which is an amazing testimony of the power available through fusion, if it were available in a safe production use at some point. Whether we actually get there has been unclear for many decades, and chances are it will remain equally uncertain going forward. JET will not be providing further assistance here as the facility will be decommissioned after this final achievement. #nuclearenergy #fusiontechnology #energysupply #alternativeenergy 08 ScienceAlert https://lnkd.in/eUygzwfm
