Commercialisation of biofortified crops key to improving the utilization impact of this great innovation to improve food security
International Researcher, Advisor, Consultant, Speaker, and Writer | Nutrition | Health | Food Security | Food systems transformation | Policy
Did You Know? The World Bank has just released its 2024 Investment Framework for Nutrition, which is a big deal as we approach the 2030 deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). 🔗: https://lnkd.in/dMcc4wvU Here’s the bottom line: To hit global targets on stunting, #anaemia, breastfeeding, and wasting, we need an additional $13 billion each year. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/dJkkvj8d The good news? To make this possible, the framework lays out a plan that taps into multiple sectors - like health, agriculture, #SocialProtection, and education. Now, when it comes to #agriculture, I’m particularly excited about the role biofortified crops can play. Imagine crops that are naturally rich in iron, vitamin A, and zinc - helping to combat anemia, boost immune systems, and support healthy #ChildDevelopment. These aren’t just ideas; they’re already making a difference. At the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), we’re pushing the boundaries by focusing on multi-nutrient biofortification. Our maize, enriched with provitamin A, iron, and zinc, is just one example. And we are not stopping there. We are also looking at underutilized crops like Bambara groundnut and African Yam bean. By enhancing their bioactive compounds, these crops have massive potential to not only improve #nutrition but also secure future #FoodSystems. Investing in biofortification efforts is a sure bet for creating more resilient food systems that can nourish the next generation. #Biofortification | #GlobalNutrition | #WorldBank | #FoodSecurity | #HiddenHunger | #EndMalnutrition | #Health | #Education | #OneCGIAR

🌱 Did you know? 🌱 Biofortification is revolutionizing the way we combat hidden hunger and micronutrient deficiencies! By enriching staple crops with essential vitamins and minerals, biofortification offers a sustainable solution to improve nutrition and health, especially in low- and middle-income countries. *Key Benefits:* • Nutritional Impact: Biofortified crops like iron beans and vitamin A maize significantly improve the nutritional status of those who consume them regularly. • Cost-Effective: This approach is not only effective but also cost-efficient, making it accessible for farming families and consumers. • Scalability: With over two decades of research, biofortification has proven to be a scalable innovation, capable of transforming food systems globally. Impressive Statistics: • In Rwanda, iron-depleted female university students saw significant improvements in iron status and cognitive function after consuming iron beans for just 4.5 months. • Biofortified crops can meet up to 90% of the daily iron requirements for women and children. Let’s support and promote biofortification to ensure a healthier future for all! 🌍💪 Read More: https://lnkd.in/gVWfpARm #Nutrition #Health #Biofortification #SustainableAgriculture #HiddenHunger #HarvestPlus

Over the past 20 years, #HarvestPlus has embarked on an impactful journey, championing Biofortification as a cost-effective and sustainable tool to combat malnutrition globally. An estimated 100 million people have reaped the benefits of biofortification, making it a significant contributor to addressing nutritional deficiencies. Biofortification emerges as a potent strategy to reshape food systems in response to the challenges posed by climate change, strengthening community food systems, and fostering resilience. In India, HarvestPlus and its partners are promoting biofortified iron pearl millet, zinc wheat, zinc rice and iron and zinc lentil. #HarvestPlusindia #biofortification #globalnutrition #climatechange #transformingfoodsystems
