It’s time to remove Pretend Time Off from our vocabularies. Pretend time off is when physicians are performing patient care, charting or documentation, refilling prescriptions, taking calls and answering messages from patients, nurses, and co workers as well as attending mandatory meetings during your PTO. Physicians need Real Time Off. Pretend Time off is more harmful, although it may appear benign. There is an association between depression and less meaningful time off. Consider this- the following specialties are exhibiting the highest rates of depression The highest rates of mild to severe depression symptoms occurred among these 10 physician specialties. They were: Urology: 38.5%. Emergency medicine: 38.3%. Family medicine: 35.8%. Obstetrics and gynecology: 33.6%. General internal medicine: 33.3%. Physical medicine and rehabilitation: 32.7%. Radiology: 32%. Pediatric subspecialty: 31.9%. Psychiatry: 31.8%. Dermatology: 31.6% #EndPretendTimeOff #RealTimeOff #physicianhealth

The second pillar in Ontario Medical Association's plan to #stopthehealthcrisis is to advance equitable health care to rural and northern Ontarians. Why? These Ontarians have worse health outcomes, shorter life expectancy and poorer access to care compared to the rest of the province. In addition, physician and other staffing shortages in the north are directly affecting access to timely and equitable care. We’ve identified 3 solutions and have asked the government to take action now: 1. First, the government needs to work with us to develop and implement a Northern Physician Workforce strategy. Family medicine, psychiatry, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, anesthesiology and internal medicine are most in need. 2. We’re also calling for a regional physician credentialling system to break down barriers that keep doctors from working across multiple hospitals, in order to prevent emergency department closures or cover other shortages. 3. The government also needs to fund opportunities for educational and targeted skills development for the unique challenges of medicine in remote communities, which helps ensure success for physicians and patients. Last month, the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) released the Stop the Crisis report to bring light to the family doctor crisis in health care. The report quotes that “there are more than 350 unfilled physician vacancies in northern communities, including more than 200 family doctors. That number does not factor in retirements that may take place over the next five years.” What should be done? Here are OMA’s solutions, summarized: 1. Northern Ontario needs a plan- now. Aside from family medicine, special attention should be provided to areas like psychiatry, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, anesthesiology, and internal medicine. What the government must do: 📌 Work with the OMA immediately to develop and implement a Northern Physician Workforce strategy similar to the Rural Co-ordination Centre in British Columbia. 📌 This will include a Co-ordination Centre for Northern Ontario that gathers data on system capacity, identifies emerging workforce issues, and supports recruitment and continuing education. 2. Break down barriers that keep doctors from working across multiple hospitals. Different approaches to credentialling across hospitals and facilities creates barriers for physicians to provide coverage across multiple sites. As a result, shortages and Emergency Department closures remain. What the government must do: 📌 Implement a seamless regional credentialling system to enable physicians to provide care across sites where they are needed most. 3. Understand communities’ unique needs. Northern and rural communities requires different skills and understanding of unique issues to provide adequate care. For example, the needs and issues of communities like Indigenous peoples should be recognized. What the government must do: 📌 Fund opportunities for educational development that builds local knowledge and targeted skills suitable for the unique challenges of medicine in northern Ontario. #StopTheCrisis hashtag#familydoctor hashtag#familymedicine

Our recent study provides a reality check on the wellness of anesthesiologists in Saskatchewan, focusing primarily on those working in urban hospitals, three years after the initial COVID-19 outbreak. 🏳 The key findings of the study are: 1️⃣ Stable Professional Fulfillment: Has remained relatively consistent, with 25% of respondents feeling professionally fulfilled in 2023 compared to 33% in 2020 (P = 0.93). 2️⃣ Increased Burnout: 54% reported burnout in 2023 compared to 36% in 2020. 3️⃣ Declining Morale: 61% reported declining morale in 2023 vs 52% in 2020. 4️⃣ Reduced Empathy: A notable decrease in connection with both patients and colleagues. These trends highlight the need for targeted interventions to address burnout and improve physician wellness. As we continue to adapt in this post-pandemic world, prioritizing the mental health of healthcare practitioners is essential for both their well being and the quality of patient care. 💪 #Healthcare #PhysicianWellness #Burnout #Anesthesiology #MentalHealth #MedicalResearch 🔍 Check out the full article here:

The number of female physicians has surged, with women now making up 38% of all physicians in the U.S. and over 55% of medical students! Many are leading the charge in primary care fields like pediatrics, family medicine, internal medicine, and OB-GYN. And while a significant number are entering surgical specialties, we still see fewer women in non-surgical areas like cardiology, gastroenterology, and neurology. As we celebrate this progress, let’s encourage even more women to explore all specialties! Together, we can build a more diverse and inclusive healthcare system. 💪✨ #WomenInMedicine #DiversityInHealthcare #FutureOfMedicine
