The fragmented systems of care currently in place often fail to meet the nuanced needs of individuals, leading to gaps in service provision, stigma, and barriers to recovery. Working in mental health, I’m very aware of the prevalence of mental health challenges amongst our community. Yet, for some reason, when the annual Health of the Nation report produced by the The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) comes out, I’m surprised that GPs consistently report mental health related presentations are the most common health issues they see. In 2024, 71% GPs reported psychological issues in their top three reasons for patient presentations. More funding for mental health is certainly needed and so too is training for GPs and health professionals working with patients. The development of the new Mental Health Bill, which will replace the existing Mental Health Acts 2001–2022, is a longstanding priority of the Department of Health and features in the current Programme for Government https://lnkd.in/ezr6HMUM

We welcome the Government's allocation of an additional 16M to the development of new measures in mental health in #Budget2025. We are glad to see the additional 8% / 88M allocation to Tusla's Children & Family support programmes, which includes the provision of affordable and accessible therapy to children and families in community-based services. The additional spend in mental health brings it to just under 6% of the overall health budget. This is still 6 - 8% less than required levels for effective services. This budget is progress but we still have a long road ahead to excellent services in #mentalhealth. #communitytherapy #counselling #psychotherapy Mental Health Reform

In many rural areas, mental health care is a distant dream because there are no clinics, no diagnosis, and no support. Too many people are left to suffer in silence, with stigma and myths making it even harder to seek help. Therapy is also expensive, and many can't even afford a diagnosis. It’s sad to see our country ranks among the highest in global suicide rates, and rural communities are hit hardest by the lack of accessible care. This makes me ask; at what time will there be healthcare policies that reach everyone, no matter where they live?. Because Mental health care shouldn’t be a luxury rather, a necessity. #MentalHealthForAll #SupportRuralCommunities
