I wasn't sure about the outcome when I curated this closed-door roundtable discussion about Generative AI and Music at this year's Reeperbahn Festival. The conversation about such a controversial topic was bound to get heated with 30 people from across the music and tech industry in one room. But because it was a closed-door session, everybody in the room contributed very openly to the vivacious conversation with questions, opinions, and thoughts - without any prejudgement. The discussion was intense but very respectful. I chose a graphic recording as form of documentation to summarize the 2-hour long session not only because it looks beautiful but also because it captures the most important points anonymously. Thanks to the amazing Anne Lehmann who managed to follow the sometimes pretty specific and nuanced arguments while simultaneously creating this graphic recording of the roundtable. She is a true master of multitasking using different senses. Kudos to Rebecca (Becky) Brook, Bruno Kramm, Cliff Fluet, Martin Clancy and Olivia Coléon for their expertise and openness, Dennis Kastrup for conducting this conversation, and all the participants who contributed to it. It was great fun and very insightful. Let's have more constructive discussions that allow sharing of fears, transfer of knowledge, and access to insights from people from different areas and with different expertise and opinions. I would like to encourage other curators and conference organisers to also create a safe space for such conversations and make use of graphic recording artists. So, none of the data we used was stolen, therefore our customers are safe from any legal concerns. The best part is that these artists hold majority of the profit share. This is more than just a tool, it’s a sign to the Music Industry, in order for AI in Music to continue, it MUST prioritize the artist. To do that, the industry and its consumers must be willing to support the human creators more than the humans making AI to create. Everyone is talking about the major label lawsuits against Suno and Udio, and this being a "warning" for what is to come. Sure, it is a black eye to GenAI in music, but let's not assume this is a blanket problem across the industry. It's quite simple, actually. Have clear, original, and licensed data that you are training with and be transparent with your datasets. These practices are probably occurring with more AI companies than we think, yet it is still not as big of a problem in the industry as we think. We are still in the semi-early stages of GenAI in music, but there are many of us that are using clean data to create useful platforms!
