It's May 1st. Check out this closing fireside chat from the Startup Grind Global conference led by Derek Andersen. Garry Tan from Y Combinator shares insights on shaping the future of innovation, technology, and the economy. https://lnkd.in/ggf9b74k Two Q&A sessions stand out to me the most.: Derek: AI has a huge impact on consumers. Why are consumers cool again (opportunity for startups)? Garry: As you went further out on the consumer spectrum, the retention cohort curve started dipping down. If you look at the consumer category broadly, you could just look at long-term cohort retention. 20% is the minimum of what you need long-term to run a business of any value. It means one in five people who try your product use it forever. Derek: Do you think AI increases this trend of loneliness and sort of isolation of humans? Do you think it has the potential to unlock and change some of the negative trends that technology has had on our human experience? In an innovation ecosystem, imagine universities, research labs, tech startups, and large corporations each working on their own platforms. If their tools can’t “talk” to each other, progress is slow, and valuable opportunities for collaboration are missed. But if their systems are designed to be interoperable, they can easily share research, technology, and resources—accelerating the entire process of bringing ideas to life. #innovation #ipc #innovationliquidity #patents #growth https://lnkd.in/gMvxEC3U

Very different takes on the same issue. The interesting part is that both non-institutionals (Beekee and Kiwix) had a client-centric, content- and results-first approach (and grow from there), whereas Giga is entirely top-down, working with governments to map schools everywhere before trying to get them all connected to the broader internet.
Thank you to the Foreign Press Association in Switzerland and Liechtenstein (APES) for featuring the work of Giga at the “Swiss Tech Meets the Press” event, alongside the University of Geneva Innovation, FacLab, International Geneva - a “kitchen” where crucial work gets done - as well as Beekee and Kiwix offline, two startups in the #edtech field, whose innovative solutions to connectivity-related challenges are a great synergy with Giga’s work to connect every school by 2030! Thank you to Max ( Masoud ) Mirgoli and team for the warm welcome to #ITFworld2024. It was a pleasure discussing #deeptech with Paul Boudre and Ann Mettler, facilitated by Peter Vanbekbergen. Insights were shared on European strengths, challenges, and growth opportunities for deep tech startups. Europe has what it takes to become a global hub for Deep Tech excellence. Some of the most valuable companies in Europe have spun out from academia - BioNTech SE, Climeworks, Darktrace, and Oxford Nanopore Technologies. Scaling in deep tech requires patient capital, a robust ecosystem, and strategic partners for go-to-market. Global ambition is key as it is a winner-take-all game for startups building critical infrastructure. Levers to unlock the potential for deep tech in Europe include: ‣ Strengthening talent/excellence clusters ‣ Harmonizing spinout terms and reduce bureaucracy ‣ Encouraging more entrepreneurs to move into deep tech ‣ Increasing LP base and institutional investors participation ‣ Shifting government and corporations to become customers ‣ Reviewing innovation regulations I welcome your thoughts and more conversations offline.
