The Influence Of Post-Modernist Architecture The architectural landscape of the 20th century was dominated by the Modernist movement, which championed simplicity, functionality, and a rejection of traditional ornamental elements. However, as the century progressed, a growing dissatisfaction with the rigidity and uniformity of Modernist architecture began to emerge, paving the way for a new era of architectural expression – Post-Modernism. The seeds of Post-Modernist architecture were sown in the mid-20th century, as architects and theorists began to question the dogmatic principles of Modernism. One of the pioneers of this movement was Robert Venturi, whose seminal work, "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture," published in 1966, challenged the prevailing notion of simplicity as the ultimate virtue in design. Jon Wright reviews Modern Architecture in a Post-Modern Era by Elie G. Haddad in Building Design. The book provides a concise exploration of the evolution of post-war modernism, charting the development of styles such as brutalism, neo-rationalism, high-tech, and postmodernism over the past six decades. Haddad combines theory with project analysis, offering insights into how these movements have shaped global architecture. Jon writes, "The real purpose and joy of this book is to be found in the end sections of each style, where Haddad unveils the later developments of each of these departures and gives well-illustrated examples from a global perspective." The review highlights the significance of Haddad’s work as both a starting point for understanding post-war modernism and a guide to recognising its ongoing relevance to architectural heritage and practice. https://lnkd.in/eNC-wfAj #architecture #modernism Jon Wright

When it comes to Dutch architecture, opinions can be polarized. Some argue that it's always been, and continues to be, boring. But is that truly the case? Aaron Betsky challenges this notion of Dutch architecture as boring in his thought-provoking article on Dezeen. He highlights the diverse range of architectural styles and perspectives that Dutch architects offer, from the iconic works of Rem Koolhaas to the innovative designs of Wiel Arets and Jacob Van Rijs. My personal question is, is industrialization of the architectural practice what is causing the monotony of the boxes mentioned in the article, or will we continue to blame regulations? #DutchArchitecture #ArchitecturalPerspectives #DesignDiversity Link to article: https://lnkd.in/eAn7pReT
