The Atlantic Puffin, often referred to as the "clown of the sea," is a charismatic seabird that inhabits the North Atlantic Ocean. Known for its striking appearance and colourful beak, the puffin stands out with its black and white plumage contrasted by bright orange-red feet and a distinctive, triangular-shaped bill that fades from vibrant orange in the summer to a duller grey in winter. These birds are adept swimmers and flyers, using their wings to "fly" underwater in pursuit of small fish like herring and sand eels, which form the bulk of their diet. Puffins are skilled hunters, capable of diving up to 60 meters (200 feet) deep to catch their prey. Breeding colonies, known as "puffinries," are typically found on remote coastal cliffs or offshore islands where they nest in burrows dug into the soft soil or between rocks. Puffins are monogamous birds, often returning to the same mate and burrow year after year during the breeding season. During the summer months, these seabirds gather in large numbers on their breeding grounds, engaging in elaborate courtship displays and caring for their single egg. After a roughly 40-day incubation period, puffin chicks, called pufflings, hatch and are cared for by both parents until they fledge and are ready to fend for themselves. #puffin #atlanticpuffin #matildabishop #graphicdesign #environmentalillustration #illustrator #seabird #drawing #conservation

C𝐫o𝐰s U𝐬e T𝐰i𝐠s t𝐨 𝐃i𝐠 𝐟o𝐫 𝐅o𝐨d 𝐀 𝐂l𝐞v𝐞r S𝐮r𝐯i𝐯a𝐥 𝐓r𝐢c𝐤: 💜Imagine a black-feathered crow perched on a branch, scanning the ground for a meal. But this isn’t an ordinary scavenger. Instead of just hopping down and pecking at scraps, this clever bird has a trick up its wing. It picks up a small twig, holds it in its beak, and flies to a nearby patch of soil. The crow then uses the twig like a tool, digging into the ground to search for insects hidden below the surface. 💜This behavior shows how intelligent these birds really are. Crows, especially those like the New Caledonian crow, have been observed using sticks, leaves, and even their own feathers as tools to extract food from difficult places. It’s a survival tactic that demonstrates problem-solving skills and a level of intelligence not often seen in animals outside of primates. 💜By digging with twigs, crows can access food that other birds might overlook, giving them an edge in the wild. It’s yet another reason why these birds have earned their reputation as some of nature’s smartest creatures. #Amazingbirds #Amazinganimal #Animalworld #viral

✨The European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus) is a unique bird of prey widespread across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Unlike typical raptors, it specializes in feeding on the larvae, nests, and adults of wasps and bees. Equipped with a sturdy beak and tough skin around the head, it can efficiently dismantle nests without suffering stings. 👉Honey buzzards have long, broad wings and a distinctive flight pattern, characterized by slow, deliberate wing beats and soaring glides.Their plumage is highly variable, aiding in camouflage and sometimes mimicking other raptors, which may deter predators. 👉During breeding, they prefer deciduous or mixed forests, often nesting in high trees. They undertake a remarkable migration each year, traveling from their breeding grounds in Europe to wintering sites in tropical Africa. 👉This journey is notable for its length and the challenges posed by crossing the Mediterranean Sea and Sahara Desert. Conservation-wise, the honey buzzard benefits from protected status across much of its range, though it can be threatened by habitat loss and illegal hunting in some regions. #HoneyBuzzard #BirdsOfPrey #EuropeanHoneyBuzzard #Wildlife #Ornithology #BirdMigration #NatureConservation #BirdWatching #RaptorBiology

Seagulls and crows are both members of the bird family, but they differ in several key aspects. Firstly, their physical appearances contrast significantly. Seagulls typically have white or gray feathers, with long wings and a slender body adapted for gliding effortlessly over water. In contrast, crows are usually black with a robust build and shorter, rounded wings, suited for agile flight in various environments. These differences in morphology reflect their respective habitats and feeding behaviors. Secondly, their habitats and behavior vary greatly. Seagulls are commonly found near coastal areas, where they scavenge for food along shorelines and in coastal towns. They are often seen hovering over beaches, harbors, and fishing boats, searching for fish, crustaceans, and scraps left by humans. On the other hand, crows are highly adaptable and can thrive in diverse environments, including urban areas, forests, and agricultural fields. They are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on a wide range of items such as insects, small mammals, carrion, fruits, and grains. Lastly, their social structures and vocalizations differ. Seagulls tend to form large colonies, especially during breeding season, where they engage in complex courtship displays and vocalizations. They are known for their distinctive calls, which vary between species and can range from haunting cries to raucous squawks. Crows, meanwhile, are often observed in smaller family groups or pairs. They communicate with a diverse array of vocalizations, including the well-known cawing sound, which serves various purposes such as warning of danger or coordinating group activities. Overall, while seagulls and crows share certain characteristics as birds, their differences in appearance, habitat, behavior, and social structure make each species unique and fascinating in its own right.

Is that a T-Rex perched on this native Prairie Dock? Net exactly, but the Eastern Kingbird's latin name is Tyrannus tyrannus. The latin word "Tyrannus" translates to "tyrant, despot, or king," reflecting the assertive behavior Kingbirds display towards each other and other species. When safeguarding their nests, they fearlessly confront larger predators such as hawks, crows, and squirrels. Good for them. While not currently a species at risk, Eastern Kingbird populations have been in decline since the 1970's and scientists aren't sure exactly why. What we do know is that the Kingbird requires habitat with lots of flying insects and spaces to perch. A hunting Kingbird puts on quite a show, catching flying insects midair and either swallowing them while airborne or taking the larger insects back to their perch, which they will beat into submission before consuming them whole. Planting tall natives like Prairie Dock, Cup Plant and Green Headed Coneflower are a great way to provide habitat for both insects and the Eastern Kingbirds. #Birds #NorthernWildflowers #NativePlants #Conservation #Wildlife #Garden #Nature

Here are some fish🐟 species that are suitable for smaller tank sizes and can thrive in such an environment 🐠 : 1. Neon Tetras: These small, peaceful fish are colorful and active, making them a popular choice for smaller tanks. 2. Dwarf Gouramis: These fish have vibrant colors and are relatively easy to care for. They add a nice centerpiece to the tank.🐡 3. Betta Fish: Betta fish, also known as Siamese fighting fish, are known for their vibrant colors and flowing fins. They can do well in a 15-gallon tank if kept alone or with compatible tankmates. 4. Endler's Livebearers: Similar to guppies but smaller in size, Endler's livebearers are active fish with striking colors. 5. Pygmy Corydoras: These small catfish are peaceful bottom-dwellers that add activity to the lower levels of the tank. 6. Cherry Shrimp: While not fish, cherry shrimp are excellent for smaller tanks. They help clean up algae and add interest to the tank with their bright red coloration.🐟 Remember to research the specific needs and compatibility of each species before adding them to your aquarium. 🐟 #aquarium #aquascaping #aquariumfish #fishtank

Oh, hiii field friend! 🐍 Diamond-back water snake (Nerodia rhombifer) spotted basking on a wetland edge with Josh Kohler! Temperatures are warming up in some parts of the country so watch your step! 🥾 🐍 Non-venomous: Diamond-backed watersnakes are not dangerous to people or pets, but they will readily bite to defend themselves. These snakes are not aggressive and avoid direct contact with people and pets. 🐍 Found in and around freshwater lakes, ponds, marshes, swamps, and large streams and rivers, especially in the low country. Observed statewide except for in brackish and salt marshes of the coastal regions. 🐍 A medium-large snake 18 to 65 inches long. Pale gray-brown or tan above with dark brown or black crossbars alternating on the back and sides. Undersides are yellowish with small dark markings. 🐍 These snakes are not constrictors and overpower their prey by grabbing it in their jaws, hauling it to shore, and swallowing it after it has been subdued. 🐍 Diamond-backed watersnakes are typically nocturnal, but they may become more diurnal during the spring and fall. They perfer hunting in waters typically at night. #wildlifephotography #wildlifebiologist #wetlanddelineations #snake #nonvenomous #noperope #dangernoodle #fieldwork #louisiana #ecologist

One of my popular fish names for a 15-gallon tank is the Betta fish. They're known for their vibrant colors, long fins, and relatively low maintenance requirements. Bettas are also solitary fish, so you won't need to worry about them needing companionship like some other species. However, it's important to note that even though they can survive in smaller tanks, they still need proper care, including regular water changes and a suitable environment with hiding spots and plants. Always research specific species to ensure they're a good fit for your tank setup and water parameters. #bettafish #aquarium #aquascaping #aquariumfish

🐟 Critically endangered coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) are anadromous fish, which means they live part of their lives in freshwater and the other part in the salt water of the ocean. After multiple years feeding and growing in the open ocean, coho salmon nearly always return upstream to lay their eggs in the same place where they hatched. Standing redwoods shade creeks keeping the water cool while fallen trees help trap sediment and slow water flow, creating pools and hiding places for coho salmon. In return, salmon add important nutrients back into the forest’s soil. However, more than a century of human activities like logging and damming have led to a steep decline in the coho salmon population. Coho salmon are just one of the species that benefit from protecting and restoring redwood forests.
