Pleased to share an initial Birkbeck, University of London response to the Universities UK 'blueprint for change' Priority asks which we'll be pushing - - Government must look at the potential of a graduate contribution as opposed to a loan system. - The growing regulatory burden is in danger of stifling innovation, and time and thought is needed to ensure that the Office for Students operates in a proportionate manner informed by risk. - There is also a need to build funding and regulatory arrangements that support, rather than penalise, flexibility and lifelong learning. It is imperative that gaps that impede progression between different funding and regulatory regimes under which adults can access education and skills are eradicated.

If this is to happen, and it needs to, then UK universities MUST actually understand how humans develop to learn efficiently and their research and wider practices must support that process. HINT: that is currently not happening. * Departments in universities are not working together critically and collaboratively. There is too much silo thinking going on. * Undergraduates are not being supported to ensure that they develop to the point where they can access all aspects of their courses. There is no understanding that that is possible. * MBA students are paying out vast fees for courses often because they have gaps in their basic cognitive processing. Yet no course in the country checks the basics or sorts them out, but they are more than happy to take the cash. As the new academic term begins, universities are once again facing a tough challenge – the rising costs of education. A recent article from the BBC (https://lnkd.in/gfafB3Nz) highlights the growing pressure on institutions to raise tuition fees. But is increasing costs the only way forward? Could digital learning play a pivotal role in tackling this issue? By leveraging technology to scale learning opportunities, universities could: - Expand access to high-quality education without the need for additional physical infrastructure. - Provide more cost-effective, flexible learning solutions for students. - Create a more inclusive education environment, offering opportunities to learners from all walks of life. While tuition fees may need to rise to meet the growing demands on universities, embracing innovative digital solutions could help institutions keep costs in check, ensuring that education remains accessible without compromising quality. What are your thoughts? There is so much opportunity within universities to utilise facilities and resources more effectively without effecting student experience, infact improving it. There was a saying I once was introduced to during my ILM Directors course 'If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got' This was the way people used to view business and the way to success, we didnt accept it then as students and I dont accept it now... Universities that believe this will continue to stuggle in a far more competitive world, standing still or sticking to old outdated thinking will see others overtake you quickly. It is time to diversify income, improve services, become leaner and more efficient and really focus on the student. Your campuses are full of opportunity, use it. So much about HE makes it harder for the student to enjoy or even enter HE, systems that are built on 'how its always been done'. I have proven that it doesnt have to be that way, universities just need a willingness to challenge and change, a real desire to put student first and i can see a way out of this for many institutions. University is an amazing learning and life learning period of a young persons life, this is unpopular but i see too many barriers, too many opinions, too many reasons to say no before trying for many institutions to navigate thier way out until its too late. #universities #highereducation

The article, raises valid concerns about the financial struggles facing UK universities. It rightly argues that treating higher education as a private-sector business undermines its long-term societal value. However, the article misses a crucial point: universities need not only more funding but also a reform in the way students are trained. Graduate and undergraduate programs must evolve beyond producing specialists to nurturing critical thinkers who can tackle broader societal and scientific challenges. Countries with strong public investments in education don’t just pump money into research; they also focus on interdisciplinary thinking and fostering future leaders. The financial crises in UK universities stem not just from underfunding but from a narrow focus on short-term results. Universities should prepare students to be adaptive problem solvers, ready to confront the complex, ethical, and social challenges ahead. In conclusion, universities are not businesses. They are the foundation of intellectual and societal progress, and treating them like profit-driven entities erodes their true purpose. We need a long-term vision where both financial and educational structures are built to foster future generations of critical thinkers. https://lnkd.in/e-2WpwPW
