Last year, I had the privilege of speaking at the 91st Annual Assembly of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, Inc. Federation of Block Units, where I shared Leroy Bundy's inspiring story of fearless leadership. A special thank you to Ciera L Simril MA, President of the Federation of Block Units, for organizing such a powerful event that brought our community together to reflect, connect, and act on how we can uplift and protect each other. Leroy's courage reminds us that real leadership is about showing up for your people, even when the odds are stacked against you. Whether you're leading your family, your team, or your community, it’s about taking bold action and inspiring others to do the same. Leadership isn’t about waiting for the perfect moment—it’s about creating it. Today, I challenge myself and all of you to reflect on this: What’s one tangible action you can take this week to lead in your community? It could be as simple as mentoring someone, standing up for a cause, or organizing a small group to address a local issue. 🌟 Shining a Light on the American South’s Untapped Change-Makers 🌟 Marc Carr MBA reflects on a recent tour of the American South, it’s clear that we’re only scratching the surface of the immense change-making talent that exists within these communities. From Clarksdale, Mississippi—known as the home of the blues but rich with community redevelopment efforts—to bustling Charlotte, I witnessed powerful initiatives led by local leaders deeply rooted in the challenges their communities face. These “proximate leaders” are the very people driving innovative solutions, reclaiming their communities, and demonstrating a unique, authentic approach to impact that only those close to the issues can bring. This journey reinforced the importance of being on the ground, not just looking at data from afar. Foundations have a crucial role in supporting these local changemakers by truly understanding community needs, which often means taking the time to tour, listen, and learn firsthand. Supporting these leaders—who are overlooked far too often—can help catalyze sustainable, locally driven change. If foundations, investors, and advocates continue to focus on proximate leadership, we can uplift these communities and the often-overlooked positive stories that exist alongside the challenges. As more young Indigenous people are starting to vote, sharing their desires to be a part of a system created to govern the country, it should be imperative that there is an Indigenous voice at every table, a voice that is elected by their own people. There are so many reasons the time is now for making this change. Guiding resilient stewardship of land, providing historical knowledge of where we have all come from with a forward thinking model of leadership, are but two critical areas that this new model would benefit from immediately. #indigenousleadership #municipalpolitics #learnandgrow

It was an honor to be in community with our Coro Southern California alumni who are leading the charge in addressing housing insecurity and houselessness across our region. Together, we engaged in a meaningful dialogue about the future of leadership in housing access and houselessness, exploring the critical skills and vision needed to create lasting change. A special thank you to our partner, Cedars-Sinai, and my exceptional friend, co-host and co-moderator, Erin Jackson-Ward, DrPH. As we tackle our most entrenched public challenges, it is essential to be in community. The collective commitment to tackling these complex issues through collaboration and innovation represents our promise to a future where every Angeleno has a safe, stable place to call home. By connecting visionary leaders, sharing diverse insights, and fostering authentic conversations, we are not only uncovering solutions but also igniting the collective action needed to drive real change. Key takeaways from our discussion: 🔵 We must invest in leadership retention, pipeline, and succession infrastructure within the sector. 🔵 We need more spaces that remind us of our shared purpose and mutual support - that we have each other. 🔵 Our progress is limited by the strength of our relationships—creating ongoing opportunities for connection is crucial. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, or other government benefits or incentives did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project? Is the affordability period permanent and in perpetuity? 3. What guarantees exist have your local, state, and federal government officials obtained in writing that rents will not go up or that tenants will not be displaced or evicted after the "affordability period expires?
