Let’s face it—the market for AML and KYC roles is tough right now. Hundreds of applicants for each role, and often little to no feedback. Automation, uncertainty, and cost-cutting have led to an oversupply of KYC professionals. So, what can you do? Upskilling is a great option, but where to start? Think about what excites you—fraud, 2nd line financial crime, compliance advisory, sanctions? Focus on that. Experience often outweighs qualifications, so how do you gain it? 🔥 Reach out to your network for short-term projects or volunteering. These gigs can give your CV and interactions a boost. ⚡️ If you're already in a role, show an interest in other departments. 🚀 Networking is key—attend free face-to-face events and roundtables. MLROs and Heads of Compliance often scout for talent at these gatherings, giving you a chance to bypass the usual application process. 💥 Explore free courses or certifications to test your interest in new areas. Stay on top of new regulations and technology. Upskilling doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Start small, stay consistent, and lean on your network—you might be surprised at how quickly doors open.

Good afternoon, LinkedIn connections. I am still looking for a new role where I can utilize my experience and skills. I am here to report that there is still a lot of ghosting from potential employers but it is not as bad as it used to be in early 2024. I reaching out to you to ask that you forward any compliance-related leads my way. My challenge has been that the bulk of my experience has been in registration and I am being passed over any AML, KYC, etc., roles because of that. It seems like the hiring managers are looking for an exact 100% match for what they are posting for, or they think candidates will not stay long-term. To the first point, hire the person who matches 80% of what you are looking for. Any experienced compliance person will quickly learn new compliance rules. Chances are, they have already been exposed to those rules and have some knowledge of what you want this candidate to do. The candidate will spend more time learning your internal processes and procedures which will solidify the rules. To the latter point, hiring managers should not be worried about how long a person stays with the company. Their responsibility is to fill the vacancy. The company culture and how the manager treats that person determines whether this employee will stay long-term.

Hiring managers, your market is speaking to you: stop and hear them: We all started in this world with no degrees, no certificates, no fancy clothes, no network. All we had were our dreams and hopes for a better tomorrow: The power of this world always works in circles, and we need to recognize this and support our professionals looking for a better tomorrow. So hear this: -your candidate's promotion is not contingent on the # of years in their role. -your candidate's age is irrelevant to their potential. -your candidate's experience outside of your local market and geography is an asset to their application. Give them a chance for a better tomorrow. no more excuses. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Share this with your network.
