As we prepare to celebrate the New Year 🎆 , we'd like to take this opportunity to give kudos to Mayor Indya Kincannon and the City of Knoxville, TN for their work this year to improve street safety. 🚵♀️ 🚶♀️
This year, Knoxville hosted our 2024 Mayors Institute on Pedestrian Safety (MIPS) Meeting in August which allowed MIPS cohort members to see some of the great pedestrian safety improvements happening in the City. We love seeing and sharing how MIP cities continue to work towards #SaferStreets for all.
Check out the hashtag ➡️ #knoxvillewrapped to see more of Knoxville's highlights and progress from 2024.
Cheers to safer streets in 2025! 🌟 🚲 🚶

It's almost a "wrap" on 2024, and like many of you, the City of Knoxville is counting our successes, like:
-- Knoxville Firefighters responded to more than 25,000 emergency calls for service
-- Public Service crews planted 969 trees, collected 98,0005 bags of litter, mowed 1,000-plus overgrown or abandoned lots and patched 5,762 potholes
-- Knoxville Area Transit provided more than 2.8 million rides, surpassing 2019 ridership numbers

Climate change causing California wildfires? From the California State Fire Marshall: "95% of the wildfires in our jurisdiction are caused by people. That ranges from accidental to negligence to arson, and everything in between." on a question I posed to him and answered.
No climate agenda is going to stop this. If, however, the insurance and building construction industry wants to solve this issue, spend the money on using building materials like MgO that are noncombustible rather than combustible wood products in fire regions. MgO also sequesters carbon as a matter of its chemistry while in use, wood does not. Wood only stores the carbon, and its former tree no longer sequesters carbon dioxide, and any replacement seedlings will take many decades to equal the amount of CO2 sequestered by that now felled tree that produced the wood that built these structures thus the rise in CO2 atmospheric concentrations.
As the world population continues to increase, this will only get worse unless other approaches and materials to building structures are looked at rather than using only wood products.
Look for our US MgO mega factories coming soon. Mike Cregan Robert (RY) Scarborough (LION 3K)David SalemKlaus MeyerMustaafa Ali

Don't Trash Arizona is a program implemented by the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) in collaboration with the Arizona Department of Transportation, to address the environmental, economic, safety, and health impacts of freeway litter along regional and state highways.
The program is funded through Prop 400, approved by voters in 2004, to be renewed via Prop 479 in Nov. That funding encompasses litter pickup, sweeping, and landscape maintenance, as well as education and prevention. From 2018 to 2022, 32 people died on Arizona highways due to unsecured loads. In 2022, there were 1,100 crashes and nine fatalities related to dangerous debris in AZ.
Our hearts and thoughts are with the families and communities in Los Angeles County affected by these tragic fires this week that continue to grow. We are also inspired by the resilience and dedication of those first responders from around the country working tirelessly to protect lives, homes, and landscapes.
These urban fires and fires in the “wild urban interface” highlight the urgent need to adapt communities and provide effective and safe responses. While these fires are in many ways different than the wildfires that have burned millions of acres of forests and rural communities in the West just this last year, they do highlight the need for our society to deepen our understanding of the complexity of today’s wildfires and how we can take action, including in how we manage our forests, to create more resilient communities and landscapes. This has been and will continue to be a priority for our programming, but for now, our focus is on the safety of these communities.

Maine Audubon says as many as 988 million birds die each year in the U.S. after accidentally colliding with windows. Nick Lund, advocacy and outreach manager for Maine Audubon, says birds see sky and trees reflected in windows and fly into them. He says a recent study shows most birds don't survive a strike even if they fly away. "There are often internal injuries that are not present on birds even when they sort of recover. The study last week shows 70% have a fatal or long-lasting injury from a strike," he says, "so trying to avoid collisions is the best strategy to protect birds." Lund says any homeowner can apply decals or tape to their windows at a low cost, or use screens year-round to protect birds. And there are now bird-safe windows on the market that can be used in new construction.

Some expert disaster damage analysis reports indicate that property loss estimation from recent wildfires in California could exceed $50 billion.
The insurance industry's contribution and backup support may be less than 5% of that estimated loss.
The remaining 95% of the losses fall under these categories:
🔴Uninsured cases (due to premium price hike),
🟠Wildfire risk exclusion,
🔵Severe underinsurance cases
🟢Couldn't afford to buy insurance cases and
⚫As some insurers even go into bankruptcy cases post such natural peril hit into their books.
Even in developed countries, insurance penetration (actual loss settlement capacity post perils-hit) is not more than 5%.
Time has come to put more effort into developing our 6 lakh Indian villages so that senior citizens of developing and developed countries can come and spend their retirement days in Indian villages.
And time has also come to value our great Indian great culture, friendly hospitality environment, basic risk management practices we have beyond per capita figure, stocks valuations and exchange rate.

It comes from within. Sometimes never knowing it is core to your humanity until that one day something sparks the flame for the need to be there for your community; your friends; your family; total strangers.
Overcoming the bystander mentality and becoming the responder. Not only getting out of the comfortable box your life may be inhabiting, but shredding the box to do something not many can.
It’s not easy, nor should it be. But their is no greater reward than being a part of something that is bigger than yourself.
Fire departments of all sizes all across the country, paid and volunteer, are in need of individuals to answer the call. To make that difference. To be the one others can count on. To be the help at the end of a 9-1-1 call.
No matter what your day job, no matter what your experience, find out more about opportunities at your community fire, rescue or EMS department.
Even if this world may not fit you, know that your support of every fire, rescue and EMS department across this country is desperately needed.
Volunteer departments especially need your support financially. Many operate with struggling budgets yet still manage to respond to your call. It is your support that helps make the entire 9-1-1 system work.
So the challenge to you is find your local department. Find out if volunteering is for you, and if not, help support those that do.
Support those that respond in your hour of need.
9-1-1; what is your emergency?

I came across something recently that really stuck with me.
Most firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers.
That means these incredible individuals save lives and respond to emergencies, often in the middle of the night, driven not by a paycheck but by a genuine dedication to their community and neighbors.
However, I also learned that many of these volunteers are aging, and there aren't enough new recruits to take their place. This could result in longer response times—sometimes over 30 minutes—which is a concern for all of us.
Our customers, dealers, and employees rely on these volunteer first responders during emergencies. That's why I'm excited to share that John Deere has joined forces with the National Volunteer Fire Council, Hold Fast Features, and Vignette to create the documentary called 'Odd Hours, No Pay, Cool Hat.'
The goal of the film is to highlight the incredible contributions of volunteer firefighters and inspire more people to step up and continue this vital service.
I hope the film resonates with you as much as it does with me.
You can watch it on public television now until October 29. It’s also available to rent or buy: https://lnkd.in/g3BG7ZdU
Wildfires are not just a crisis for Southern California; they are a global wake-up call. They highlight the interconnectedness of environmental stewardship, urban planning, and climate action. Addressing these fires requires long-term investment in resilience and sustainability while acknowledging the lessons from nature and history.
The challenge is immense, but with bold policies, technological innovation, and a collaborative mindset, we can shift the narrative from apocalyptic devastation to resilient coexistence.
