Hi EV addicts, set to debut in February 2027, the European Union's Battery Passport marks a significant stride towards a sustainable and circular economy. This initiative, under the EU Battery Regulation, mandates a digital product passport (DPP) for batteries, encompassing electric vehicles (EVs), light transport means, and industrial batteries over 2kWh. It aims to provide a secure digital format containing comprehensive lifecycle information, facilitating transparency from manufacturing through to end-of-life. >> The EU's effort is part of a broader move to enhance sustainability and digital integration within the global economy. Countries including the USA, UK, Japan, China, and India are on similar paths, developing or considering DPPs to optimize battery production and recycling, ensuring supply chain transparency, and supporting environmental regulations like the Inflation Reduction Act in the US. >> The battery passport is expected to unlock substantial benefits across the battery lifecycle. It provides crucial data that can facilitate more informed consumer decisions, enhance recycling processes, and bolster a secondary market for used batteries. Back to my work at Chalmers University of Technology, our paper "Willingness to Participate in Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) in Sweden, 2022—Using an Electric Vehicle’s Battery for More Than Transport" just published now and free to read in Sustainability MDPI journal. This study was a part of ongoing projects in David Steen's team at Chalmers. Special thanks for David Steen for contributions and preparing the questionnaire, and Tuan Le for editing the paper. The main findings based on the responses to the questionnaire: ·       Swedish EV owners are more interested in V2H than V2G for the V2X implementation ·       The participants showed a high interest in having full control over V2X ·       EV owners would like to care about sustainability by V2X implementation ·       Respondents noted that a cost compensation should cover battery wear

I'm excited to finally see a meaningful shift towards sustainability and green technologies, considering that in 2023 we reached the highest emissions ever recorded — 37.4 billion tonnes (IEA). And what should we expect of 2024? Released by Tech.eu, European investment trends research shows cleantech raised €12.4 billion in Q1 2024, becoming the best-performing industry. However, even if the green technologies investment dynamic goes up, the initiatives it implies may not be fully sustainable yet. For instance, EVs that seem to be a great solution in terms of transportation decarbonization due to zero direct emissions in fact produce on average 2 times more CO2 compared to an ICE vehicle. And by the way, companies that specialize in battery production closed 2 out of 4 mega-rounds in the past quarter: 1/ Northvolt – a Sweden company which produces the "world's greenest battery" with a low carbon footprint and a huge focus on circular economy, secured $5 bln to expand both its original gigafactories. The thing that I really like about this project is that they have several battery recycling facilities and operations. 2/ ACC - Automotive Cells Company from France secured €4.4 billion to construct 3 gigafactories for battery cell production. Hope that both manufacturers prioritize maximizing battery life, betting on longevity rather than early recycling to ensure we truly enhance the sustainability of our energy sources. https://lnkd.in/dHwRKD9B #cleantech #battery  #energytech #netzero
