Breaking Barriers: Empowering Street and Homeless Children for a Better Tomorrow! On this International Street Children Day, let's shed light on the realities faced by these resilient young souls. While 'street children' and 'homeless children' are sometimes used interchangeably, there are important distinctions between the two. Not all homeless children live openly on the streets; many find themselves in hidden circumstances, such as sleeping on floors or in temporary accommodations like hostels. Shockingly, in 2018, around 9,500 children in the UK spent Christmas in hostels or temporary housing, often facing cramped living conditions and sharing facilities with strangers. For the homeless, rainy days bring a harsh reminder of their vulnerability and the urgent need for compassionate action. #Today Happy National Senior Citizens Day, established to honor the invaluable contributions of seniors. It has never been more important to keep a spotlight on this vulnerable community. Making up almost 25% of the population, seniors are the fastest growing demographic in San Francisco. They are also the fastest growing group entering homelessness. We see this risk every day. A staggering 60% of the calls we receive involve threats to housing.      Legal Assistance to the Elderly is the only legal services organization in San Francisco solely dedicated to addressing the unique legal needs of seniors and adults with disabilities.     In 2023 alone, we successfully defended 495 eviction cases, keeping 93% of our clients housed.  Many of the seniors we assist are just one paycheck, benefit check, or health setback away from homelessness, making our services crucial in helping them maintain their independence and dignity.      As we celebrate National Senior Citizens Day, let's honor the seniors who have given so much to our communities. Did you know that last FY, 52% of our work was specifically directed towards helping people access, set up, and maintain safe, secure homes? Ending homelessness takes more than just housing (that's why we have 6 impact pillars!) but it's an important part of the picture. Our 'housing' pillar represents how we help to prevent and end homelessness through #housingfirst, legal aid, tenancy support, and housing set up. Right now, we're in the midst of our End of Year Appeal which is solely focused on helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people, those with pets, and young people move towards safe homes. This time of year highlights the importance of family and the need for more human beings that provide warmth, love, understanding and kindness to our Young People. Young People have in the past twenthy years and some experienced austerities in the care system that have erode their trust in authority and Adults. The system has been broken since the 80’s with the closures of vital public-sector funded care homes for those young people who needed immediate safe-guarding. They have been replaced with exploitive private sector led models putting profits over social responsibility. I know first hand how access to preventive care is sparse and postcode determined. I have seen parents and families broken by a system that should bring families back together. The end results are broken Young Adult thrown out at eighteen into a cruel world without any resilinace or the capacity to navigate adult life. Society is raising a generation of broken adults who struggle to cope with and engage in the responsibilities of adulthood. Our children need our support. 🙏🏾 Video information below:- More than one in ten care leavers aged 18 to 20 experience homelessness. For thousands of young people that leave care every year, there is no safety net, no helping hand. They enter adulthood alone. Coram works tirelessly to help young care leavers. With our helpline and support from our advocates, they can receive the help they need to ensure a safe place to live and other tools to enter adult life successfully. Mobility is key to independence as we age, enabling seniors to reach medical appointments, grocery stores, and social events. Dependable and safe transportation is vital for seniors to maintain their independence and thrive at home. Aviva has launched a meaningful initiative for Movember. In collaboration with Kits for Cause, and Na-Me-Res to support homeless Indigenous men in Toronto. Through this partnership, Aviva has been actively involved in preparing and assembling essential kits filled with personal care items, clothing, and other necessities to support the residents of Na-Me-Res, which provides shelter and services to Indigenous men experiencing homelessness. This initiative not only helps provide immediate relief but also raises awareness about the challenges faced by Indigenous communities.
