Summer has arrived and newbies are joining your projects. Go back in time and recall your first days in construction. The jobsite looks and sounds chaotic. The jargon used on site sounds like a foreign language. Here is a recent quote from a young field engineer - "As a novice in the industry, I felt an overall uncertainty about all the details. I had to learn on the fly - leaving me quietly Googling terms or asking embarrassing questions to my superintendent." We're asking new interns and engineers to navigate a complex construction environment while also performing important tasks. For the sake of safety, production, quality and all the other critical factors on a project, put yourself in their shoes and take time to train and orient your new folks this summer. If you're looking for time-tested resources, Construction-Education can help.

The National Association of Women in Construction began the tradition of the first week of March being a celebration of the ladies in our industry. We at Force love a reason to highlight our amazing teammates. Today we want to recognize Kelly Brinson, P.E., a Project Manager in our Force Construction team. Kelly is a Purdue grade and licensed Professional Engineer. We are excited to share her answers to a few questions on why she enjoys being part of the built environment. 1. How did you decide on your career? “I’ve always enjoyed watching a project come to life and I’ve always been a Boilermaker fan so when it came time to apply to college and to decide on what I wanted to do with my future; Civil Engineering at Purdue seemed the perfect fit. Throughout my time in college and with various internships, I found my joy came from interacting with customers and overseeing work on site versus crunching numbers and designing. Project management has given me the ability to combine all of my favorite aspects and pull knowledge from my engineering background.” 2. How long have you been in the construction industry? “Nearly 11 years” 3. What do you like about being in the construction industry? “The construction industry provides a wide variety of projects that keeps each day unique and intriguing. Not only are you continuously learning about construction related activities, but you are learning the ins and outs of how your customers products are made and the intricacies of each business.” 4. How long have you been with Force? “Nearly 11 years. I started with Force directly after I graduated; very green and hardly spoke a word. I’ve grown a lot over the last 11 years, and I’ve worked around a lot of great people here and have learned from them invaluable knowledge that no amount of schooling can teach.” 5. What advice would you give to young women thinking or to get them to think about construction? “Go for it! Construction is an industry that offers a wealth of opportunity and does not have a single “right” path to take. You have the ability to form your career around your passions and interests which allows you to always keep learning and growing as an individual.” Thank you, Kelly, for everything you do! #buildingbetterbuilders #nobodybuildsbetter

Last week our interns, Somto and Ekene visited our long-term partners Donaldson Timber Engineering and Crendon Timber Engineering Ltd. They had a fantastic day and chance to work with the High Speed Posi-Press at DTE and the latest Mark 1 Easyjig Press at Crendon. Thank you Karol Radziejowski from DTE and DAMON MATTHEWS and Conor Richards from Crendon for hosting us. These latest site visits – following a visit to Engineered Timber Solutions in Shrewsbury last month - have been timed with Somto and Ekene’s growing knowledge of MiTek machinery. Aaron Thomson, Senior Automation Engineering Manager who accompanied the interns on their visit said: “The MiTek High Speed Posi-Press (HSPP) is the top-of-the-line automation that we offer for Posi-Joist manufacture so it’s really important that they see this machine. Seeing the new Mark 1 Easyjig Press at Crendon, a 40m long table press, is also pretty impressive in action.” Back at MiTek, Somto and Ekene are applying their knowledge as they embark on their first five-day sprint, which focuses on the Mk8c press system, and pedestal design. It’s the first of five sprints over the course of the internship, which will see them take on specific engineering design challenges in respect to MiTek machines. The site visits last week enabled them to see the Mk8c in action and have in-depth discussions with the teams who operate the machines. They also had the opportunity to use the press to create a truss under the guidance of a machine supervisor. MiTek’s comprehensive Internship Programme is designed to give the T Level students exposure to all aspects of automation, with the goal of placing them on a career path within the industry. Aaron added: “It’s been very encouraging how hands on Ekene and Somto are with the machinery. We are really impressed with their confidence, progress and approach.” #Internships #UKengineering #Construction #DudleyCollege #TLevels

This year marked a significant step forward for student work experience at College. From launching the first Automotive Work Experience Week, offering onsite opportunities for all bricklaying and construction students, to establishing heritage skills training at Weston Park, we've created new pathways for young people to experience real workplace environments. Our impact in 2024: * Partnered with Furrows Telford to connect students directly with automotive industry opportunities through meaningful work placements. * Developed heritage skills training opportunities with Weston Park Enterprises, where students learn traditional crafts while contributing to landmark preservation * Delivered onsite opportunities to bricklaying and construction students to experience working on a live construction site with R1 Construction and PaveAways * Expanded T-Level industry placements across Early Years and Eduction, Business Management, Digital services and Engineering. Three posts that captured our progress: "This ground-breaking initiative focuses on building the future talent pipeline for the automotive industry and showcasing opportunities to a new generation." Launching AWE24 with industry partners https://lnkd.in/e8WjfXpn "Great opportunity for our students to learn heritage skills and become part of the history of a local landmark" Starting our Weston Park partnership https://lnkd.in/ekE9fyQi "Join us in empowering the workforce of tomorrow! Whether you're a small business or a large corporation, there's a place for you in the T Level journey." Building T-Level placement opportunities https://lnkd.in/e5Bd9g-r To every employer who hosted our students this year: you've given them more than work experience - you've shown them what's possible in their future careers. Looking ahead to 2025: we're expanding our employer partnerships, while developing new approaches to work experience across more industries. Every placement creates an opportunity for a young person to discover their potential. If you're an employer who could offer work experience opportunities: your involvement makes all the difference. Let's talk about how you can help shape the next generation of talent.

🚧 Building a Diverse Future 🛠️ Diversity is not just a buzzword; it's the scaffolding for innovation in the construction industry. As we lay the foundations for tomorrow's skylines, it's crucial that the workforce reflects the rich tapestry of society. Here's how we can reinforce diversity within our ranks: 👷♀️ Expand Recruitment Horizons: Let's start at the source. Broadening our recruitment efforts to reach underrepresented groups is a concrete step towards a more inclusive workforce. Engaging with schools, offering internships, and partnering with diverse organizations can bring fresh perspectives to our projects. 🎓 Invest in Education: Knowledge is a tool as powerful as any crane or drill. By investing in education and training programs, we can equip a wider array of individuals with the skills needed to excel in construction. Scholarships and apprenticeships can pave the way for those who might not have considered this path due to socioeconomic barriers. 🤝 Foster an Inclusive Culture: A hard hat does not, and should not, come in just one size. Creating an environment where everyone feels valued and respected is key. This means active listening, continuous dialogue, and policies that celebrate differences. It's about building bridges, not just buildings. 📈 Track Progress: What gets measured gets done. By setting diversity goals and monitoring our progress, we can ensure that our efforts are more than just window dressing. Transparency in hiring practices and career progression opportunities can hold us accountable and drive continuous improvement. #DiversityInConstruction #InclusiveWorkforce #BuildingTogether By championing diversity, we're not just constructing buildings; we're shaping a more dynamic and resilient industry. Let's join beams and hands to build a workforce as diverse as the communities we serve. 🌐🤝🏗️ #ConstructionDiversity #InclusiveBuilding #FutureOfWork
