⛔ Employment on global construction projects is outdated and unrealistic ⛔ Especially when you consider the impact on people's health, mental health, and families 👨👩👧👦 I'm specifically talking about those remote or site-based projects where 6 or 7 day weeks and 12+ hour days are the norm 🙁 What do you think about someone working under such conditions and only getting 30-40 days of leave, sometimes even less? Is the old way of not just how contract managers or quantity surveyors are employed on international projects but also all other disciplines outdated? It's not sustainable, and it's at odds with where society is today, isn't it? Just this week I've heard of clients and candidates having serious health issues related to the relentless pressure and 80+ hour weeks...... Shouldn't employers have more of a responsibility towards the welfare of their workers? Or are contracts too complex, budgets too unrealistic, and project timelines too tight that it’s forcing many companies' hands? I know this is a big ask, but it's a problem that has existed for many years and will only get worse if not addressed in some way, shape, or form. What could the industry do to address this or is it just a pipedream?

💥2025: New Year, New Opportunities💥 The construction industry in Australia is expected to see a projected increase in employment in 2025, with about 1.26 million people working in the sector. The industry is expected to grow due to increased infrastructure spending and a shift towards more sustainable construction practices. Some construction jobs in demand in Australia include: - Carpenters and joiners - Electricians - Construction managers - Plumbers - Building and plumbing labourers - Architectural, building, and surveying technicians - Painting trades workers - Earthmoving plant operators The Housing Industry Association predicts a 3% increase in residential building activity in 2025, driven by demand in both major cities and regional areas. Labor Skill Shortages: The biggest challenge for the Australian residential construction industry heading into 2025 is the ongoing skills shortage. Data from the National Skills Commission indicates that the sector will need to add over 200,000 workers by 2025 to meet demand.

Construction Employment Trends in Australia and the U.S. The construction industry is neither a technological laggard nor an industry with an unqualified and low skilled workforce. These are common misperceptions that probably are often the result of people seeing poorly organised and managed sites, which could be addressed through better site facilities and maintenance. In fact, the industry employs a wide range of skills and requires technical competence from the majority of its workers. In Australia, two thirds of the workforce have a post-school qualification, and in the U.S. it is over half. In both countries the share of unskilled labourers is small, at around 10% of the workforce. There are other interesting parallels between Australia and the U.S. In Australia, the share of professionals rose from 2% in 2000 to 6% in 2024, and the share of Managers increased from 9% in 2000 to 12%. Adding the 2024 8% share of Clerical and administrative workers makes 26% in these occupations. In the U.S. between 2014 and 2020 the share of Nonproduction employees rose from 24% to 26%. In both countries the number of Managers has increased by 50%. The share of workers with a bachelors degree or higher is also the same, around 14%. Why, despite the differences in scale and output mix in the two countries, is the composition of the workforce so similar? To some extent it must be because the methods and processes followed in design, development, construction and project management are similar, as is the use of machinery and equipment. There is not a lot of difference in some types of projects, such as commercial and institutional buildings and road and rail infrastructure. Another factor would be the geographical dispersion of activity, both are large countries and work is spread out across regions. The trend in both countries is toward fewer low skilled jobs, and this applies to both onsite labourers and offsite clerical and administrative workers. An increasing share of jobs requires qualifications, and more of these workers have university qualifications. This is not to suggest there will be no unskilled workers in future construction, but there is no reason to believe these trends have run their course. #construction #building #aec #constructionindustry

I’ve been to jobs where they have used my ambitions against me, where they felt threatened by me having my own company. Being in #HR was the worse. Maybe, because it was female dominated. On site, there are plenty of people who have their own business or self-employed. I’ve met people who are #carpenters, build barn sheds, consultants, trainers, work in their family’s construction business and one colleague just recently opened a pizzeria and work in their business on the weekends (I followed the business IG page). Some people even have multiple jobs (cleaning, food delivery, etc.). Our extra activities outside of work are known and not hidden. Even the guy who ran the #temporaryworks coordinator training course I did not too long ago, did it as a weekend side hustle and works for a major #civil / #structural engineering firm. Two weeks ago I had a conversation with a Manager and he said that he has never worked for anyone since he left school (always been a contractor). That had me thinking about the benefits of contracting vs. employment. What I noticed is that the people on site was just as ambitious as me. I love ❤️ it! I’m in my bag (“The act of becoming one with whatever task you are trying to achieve. One dimensional. Tunnel vision. Grindin”, Urban Dictionary) and love being around people who know how to make things happen. My ambition is not a problem and it never affects my work. In fact, no one’s side hustle, business has had any effect on the output they put in at work. So, why is it an issue elsewhere? This, I’m still trying to figure out but I think I’ve found my industry home and absolutely love it here. #construction #womeninconstruction #constructionindustry #constructionengineering #engineering #oilandgas #renewableenergy #infrastructure #constructionsite #buildinginfrastructure
