📣 NEW RELEASE: The #biodiversity crisis calls for action. Puzzled where to start? Preferred by Nature has developed a guide on how to design and implement impactful corporate biodiversity action. WWF's #LivingPlanetReport highlights that global wildlife 🦏population decreased 69% between 1970 to 2018, and IPBES estimate up to one million species are at risk of extinction, more than any time in human history 🤦♂️.  ❗ Urgent action is needed. For the sake of nature 🌱, and also very much for our own sake as we of course depend on nature. 🌍 UN Biodiversity urge companies to map their impacts and dependencies on biodiversity and take action to mitigate negative impacts. In the Guide, we outline how to do this, very much inspired by the methodologies developed by the Science Based Targets Network. We developed the Guide for the Danish Biodiversity Partnership - a broad group consisting of 22 representatives from industry associations, NGOs, trade unions, and research institutions, facilitated by the Danish Ministry of Environment (Miljøministeriet), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, and Danish Business Authority. 🙌 Great opportunity to discuss Horizon Europe project CircHive at the GreenCities Forum in Malaga 🌿 CircHive is on a mission to help businesses and the public sector recognise, measure, and report on the value of nature. By understanding this value, organisations can make more informed decisions that protect ecosystems, boost biodiversity, and unlock new opportunities for both society and businesses. This initiative brings together 15 research and 10 case-study partners to develop rigorous and standardised methods for combining two key approaches: biodiversity footprinting and natural capital accounting. These methods are crucial for helping organisations understand their impact on nature and improve their biodiversity performance. 🐝 CircHive will also launch the BEEHive (Biodiversity Excellence of Enterprises), a new community open to all organisations interested in measuring and managing their impact on nature. Members will have the opportunity to collaborate, test project outputs, and receive support in developing sustainable management practices. 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 🔎 The Organization for Biodiversity Certificates strives to support and uplift #biodiversity actions by establishing a biodiversity crediting system. Co-founded by aDryada and Le Printemps des Terres, in collaboration with Carbone 4 and the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, its work focused on providing a framework, a recognized measure, and #market rules to generate and value positive local impacts on ecosystems. 𝗜𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲: ✅ To develop a methodology for assessing the biodiversity gains ✅ To define a certification process for the generation of #certificates  ✅ To design a market framework for the trade and use of certificates  Rather than assessing the global corporate impact with a top-down approach like some existing tools, OBC is designing a field-based bottom-up assessment initiative that will allow for an accurate representation of local impacts. 🔎 The distinctiveness of the OBC is to gather scientific experts such as the Carbone 4 and the French National Museum of Natural History, but also projects holders having a field-based approach and companies looking for biodiversity contribution. Convinced by the necessity to integrate international standards for the measurement and the financial valuation of biodiversity in every #restoration project, we naturally decided to join OBC in January 2024. 🤝🏻 As an OBC member, Reforest’Action has been part of the market approach working group. Ten months later, following our integration, OBC officially introduced its market approach at #COP16. This methodology is action-based: it aims at creating a conductive #environment for collaboration between businesses and governments and it is directly contributing to the achievement of positive #impact on biodiversity to reach the Kunming-Montreal objectives by leveraging national biodiversity #strategies. Today, on the #InternationalDayofBiodiversity, I want to reflect on the vital role that humans can play in restoring and preserving the planet's biodiversity. Last week, I was in Mértola, Portugal, participating in the BIOTraCes international project meeting with Esther Turnhout, Tamalone van den Eijnden, Rosalie van Dam and many more brilliant scientists. BIOTraCes is dedicated to achieving transformative change for biodiversity a collaboration of eleven different European universities and research centres. During the meeting, I had the opportunity to share my insights on how commons can contribute to this vital transformation. One of the highlights of my trip was meeting Marta Cortegano and Pedro Nogueira from Terra Sintrópica. Witnessing firsthand their efforts in restoring arid landscapes through Syntropic Agroforestry was truly inspiring. This innovative approach not only restores the land but creates a nearly magical oasis in the dessert. Strangely so much of Terra Sintrópica in Portugal seemed familiar to me despite the significant differences, nearly polar opposite context and challenges, when compared to Voedselpark Amsterdam. In Amsterdam, we face intense pressure on land due to high urban density, while Terra Sintrópica deals with issues of depopulation in rural areas. Our region is often at risk of flooding due to water abundance, whereas they are coping with desertification. Additionally, Voedselpark Amsterdam is still trying to win over the local authorities, unlike Terra Sintrópica, which has support from the municipality. Despite these contrasting circumstances, I noticed profound similarities in their culture and approach. Aside from both being partners of Biotraces both initiatives embrace a non-hierarchical, commons-based way of organizing. At Terra Sintrópica, much like at Voedselpark, the mentality of having nothing to lose fosters a willingness to experiment and innovate. Also, we both learn and work with nature rather than against it at the same time prioritizing community well-being. This spirit of resilience and adaptability is something we share in our efforts as we strive to cultivate regenerative and community-focused solutions. This experience confirmed again for me that we humans can indeed be a keystone species in a positive sense. We can help restore ecological balance and strengthen biodiversity. Our conscious and collective efforts can create positive ripple effects throughout ecosystems and communities, underscoring our potential to act as stewards of land, not owners. Through the transformative work of initiatives like Terra Sintrópica, we can pave the way for a more biodiverse and regenerative future.

𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗮: 𝗜𝗡𝗕𝗢 𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗣𝗕𝗘𝗦-𝟭𝟭 While the sun sets on the Namibian savanna, I'm locked into a brightly lit airco room with INBO colleagues Anna Heck and Hilde Eggermont. With Bart Rymen from BELSPO and Catherine Debruyne from SPW, we're representing Belgium at the 11th IPBES plenary, also the first one on African soil. Together with delegates from 147 governments and indigenous peoples, we will work seven days (and nights :-) to refine the IPBES documents word by word. The goal is to adopt these as formal policy texts which help reverse the global destruction of nature. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:  🔗 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘂𝘀 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 examines the complex links between biodiversity, water, food, health, and climate change, providing crucial insights for sustainable governance. In short, "What should we do?" ✊ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 highlights the root causes of biodiversity lossbut also the ineffectiveness of current policies, and the systemic changes needed to tackle them. In short, "How should we do it?" 🔎 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 is the decisive outline for the second global assessment on biodiversity and nature's contributions to people, , to be delivered in 2028 and focusing on remaining gaps, recent developments, and what is required to reverse biodiversity loss. 🦓 It's a big privilege to be guests here, surrounded by Namibia's humbling natural beauty and people, reminding us of how urgent and important it is to translate global knowledge into policy, also back home... 🤞Hope to bring good news later this week! #Biodiversity #SciencePolicy #Sustainability #IPBES11 #TransformativeChangeAssessment #NexusAssessment #ForNature Belgian Biodiversity Platform INBO (Research Institute for Nature and Forest - Instituut voor Natuur- en Bosonderzoek)

The Biodiversa+ initiative is now accepting proposals for joint research projects on the theme of “Biodiversity and Transformative Change.” 🌍 This call focuses on understanding the complex links between biodiversity loss, climate change, and environmental pollution. 🌿 In Germany, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation and VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH, on behalf of the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, are involved in this call. In Brazil, funding may be provided by the CNPq or state funding agencies linked to the CONFAP - Conselho Nacional das Fundações Estaduais de Amparo à Pesquisa. 🤝 To participate, teams must include at least three partners from three different countries (with at least two from EU member states or associated countries) and secure funding from three supporting organisations. Excited and happy to be representing UN Global Compact Network Denmark at the UN BIODIVERSITY CONFERENCE COP16 in Cali, Colombia as part of the Danish delegation. This is the first conference after the groundbreaking Global Biodiversity Framework was adopted in 2022. We have the general direction - now we need governments to plan and act (and the US to finally ratify the agreement). We also need businesses to get more involved and I’m here advocating for more ambitious corporate action on nature and the adoption of global frameworks such as Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and Science Based Targets for Nature. Danish companies Ørsted, PKA, TDC NET, Novo Nordisk and Pandora have already adopted TNFD – now we need the rest of the biggest onboard. We don’t have much time. The WWF's new Living Planet report is on one side a depressing read (e.g. a 73% decline in the average size of monitored wildlife populations over just 50 years), on the other side full of opportunities to take our ecosystem services seriously, restructure our food systems and prioritize nature-based solutions for the benefit of all. If your company is based in the Nordic region, please check out the Nordic TNFD Consultation Group, which we are running together with Finans Danmark. It's a group that shares best pratice on adopting TNFD and valuable insights from the framework itself. It’s open to all Nordic businesses. Link in the comments section.

[EU project, my project 2024 | Pivka.Kras.Presiha] Celebrating Biodiversity at the “Diversity of Upper Pivka” Event As part of the successful Pivka.Kras.Presiha project, co-funded by the European Union, the Municipality of Pivka organized the "Diversity of Upper Pivka" event to showcase the results of our efforts to protect nature in the Pivka intermittent lakes area. Participants at the event learned about: 🦇 The lives of bats, creating bat boxes to support their habitats. 🌾 The unique wet and dry grasslands of Pivka, home to diverse plant and animal species. 🌳 The remarkable trees of the Kalc Castle area and their environmental role. The event was also attended by participants of the traditional "Vilhar Memorial Hike." This initiative highlights the importance of preserving nature through strategic use of EU funds, enhancing both environmental protection and tourism infrastructure. We are proud to have made a lasting impact on the Pivka region’s biodiversity and sustainable future.
