Excited and happy to be representing UN Global Compact Network Denmark at the UN BIODIVERSITY CONFERENCE COP16 in Cali, Colombia as part of the Danish delegation. This is the first conference after the groundbreaking Global Biodiversity Framework was adopted in 2022. We have the general direction - now we need governments to plan and act (and the US to finally ratify the agreement). We also need businesses to get more involved and I’m here advocating for more ambitious corporate action on nature and the adoption of global frameworks such as Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and Science Based Targets for Nature. Danish companies Ørsted, PKA, TDC NET, Novo Nordisk and Pandora have already adopted TNFD – now we need the rest of the biggest onboard. We don’t have much time. The WWF's new Living Planet report is on one side a depressing read (e.g. a 73% decline in the average size of monitored wildlife populations over just 50 years), on the other side full of opportunities to take our ecosystem services seriously, restructure our food systems and prioritize nature-based solutions for the benefit of all. If your company is based in the Nordic region, please check out the Nordic TNFD Consultation Group, which we are running together with Finans Danmark. It's a group that shares best pratice on adopting TNFD and valuable insights from the framework itself. It’s open to all Nordic businesses. Link in the comments section.

Why is #COP16Colombia and the Global Biodiversity Framework Important to Business? Target 19 - Mobilize $200 Billion per Year for Biodiversity From all Sources, Including $30 Billion Through International Finance This bold and seemingly expansive target is in fact grounded in a practical accounting exercise. Conservation spending is estimated at 120-150 billion USD per year, though the real need is assessed at between 720 and 970 billion. Closing the financing gap will go a long way to: ☝ Restoring degraded coastal ecosystems ☝Increasing terrestrial and marine protected areas ☝Transitioning agriculture & fisheries sectors to sustainable practices ☝Minimizing the impact of invasive species Target 19 provides for an increase in total biodiversity-related financing from developed countries, including official development assistance. But domestic resource mobilization is needed too. Thus, the target calls for developing and implementing national biodiversity finance plans, and more financing from private sector sources including through blended finance models. Target 19 also calls for innovative schemes such as payment for ecosystem services, green bonds, biodiversity offsets and credits, and benefit-sharing mechanisms. The co-benefits of financing nature conservation and climate action should also be examined closely. Lastly, the target encourages non-market-based approaches including community based natural resource management and civil society cooperation aimed at the conservation of biodiversity, with engagement from Indigenous Peoples. We invite you get involved and learn more about the Global Biodiversity Framework (#GBF) and UNDP’s #NaturePledge. ✴ Read the original text on #Target19 and review the complete list of the 23 GBF targets: https://lnkd.in/gqvH3RZC ✴ Take a look at our resources on biofinance and what UNDP is doing to scale up investments: https://lnkd.in/git57utJ ✴ Learn more about the “LEAP framework” and ways your business can manage biodiversity risks, through an assessment of your business’s impacts and dependencies on nature: https://tnfd.global/ ✴ Get in touch with us about UNDP’s Nature Pledge by visiting our website: <https://lnkd.in/gKNuvaiw> Midori Paxton Josie Raine Penny Stock Doley Tshering Jamison Ervin Maxim Vergeichik Martin Cadena Tim Scott Andrew Seidl Onno van den Heuvel

🐝 Today marks the International Day for Biological Diversity, a United Nations initiative to promote biodiversity awareness. This year's theme, "Be part of the Plan", encourages everyone to highlight how they support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework , also known as the Biodiversity Plan. The Biodiversity Plan was adopted in 2020, it sets goals and concrete measures to stop and reverse the loss of nature by 2050. In this effort, sustainable finance plays a crucial role. 🔎 Would you like to learn more about how to integrate biodiversity into financial decisions? Have a look at the summary report of the LSFI Biodiversity Masterclass! This summary report delves into... - where biodiversity stands; - why its preservation is pivotal for our future; - key international activities, commitments and frameworks that seek to address the urgency of the situation and that can support financial institutions in this field; - main steps and practical examples of how to integrate biodiversity into investment decisions by designing internal frameworks, assessing risk and applying certain strategies. Big thanks once again to the LSFI Biodiversity masterclass speakers: Bhavya Sharma, Emine Isciel, eric schauls and Gabriela Hermosilla Access the summary report ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eR4Vh4ui Learn more about the International Day for Biological Diversity ➡️ https://lnkd.in/efX5CMn Learn more about the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework ➡️ https://www.cbd.int/gbf #biodiversity #sustainablefinance #ESG

Three international organisations released a set of 21 high-level principles for biodiversity credits on Wednesday in a move designed to encourage market alignment. The guidelines were released by the Biodiversity Credit Alliance (BCA), the World Economic Forum, and the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits at #COP16 in Cali, Colombia. They apply to both regulatory and voluntary biodiversity credits, addressing matters such as ensuring robust outcomes, demand integrity, and protecting Indigenous Peoples and local communities’ rights, writes Sergio Colombo and Giada Ferraglioni. However, the three organisations did not go into detail on the highly debated issue of offsetting. The principles built on the draft high-level governance and integrity principles for voluntary biodiversity credits that were launched by WEF in 2022. With the start of #Bloom24, I’m excited to announce our first State of Biodiversity report! What I love most about my job is focusing on the people and teams behind the work. This report is more than data. It’s a story told by the people who collectively have the power to create tremendous change. And their messages are loud and clear: - We’re making progress, but have a LONG way to go. - The individuals doing this work don’t need convincing, what they need is capacity. More staff with ecological knowledge, more $$, greater buy-in. - We need to continually make the case for nature as a business priority and as a key tool for climate resilience.
The first Trellis State of Biodiversity and Business report found that most business leaders are in the process — formally or informally — of considering their impact on biodiversity and nature. Many are already taking action! 🌸 Learn more and download the report here: https://buff.ly/3BZoDIT 🌸 The report will be discussed today by Theresa Lieb, Alex Novarro, PhD and others at #Bloom24, our biodiversity event alongside #COP16, the 2024 gathering of the same group that two years ago agreed to reverse the loss of biodiversity by 2030 and called on business to contribute to the effort. The global business community has begun to respond to that challenge.

As highlighted by Carbon Pulse (https://lnkd.in/egEstkrZ) the Organization for Biodiversity Certificates has launched a groundbreaking #survey open to everyone to gather your opinions on claims related to #biodiversity #certificates. Our goal ? To ensure this powerful tool effectively contributes to the global conservation objectives set by the #Kunming-#Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Why is this survey important? We aim to define clear, concrete, and impactful claims to encourage companies to adopt biodiversity certificates. Your input is crucial to achieving these #goals. 🔍 We invite you to share your thoughts and help shape the trajectory of biodiversity credits ! 👉 Participate in the survey here : https://lnkd.in/eQwxhrgs Key points of the survey : 📅 The survey, co-organized with EY, is open until #August #2. Results will be presented at the #COP16 biodiversity summit in Cali, Colombia. 🌍 The initiative seeks to identify claims that will incentivize companies to contribute to the #30x30 #conservation target. 🛡️ Addressing concerns about greenwashing and the need for well-defined claims are among the main challenges. 🎯 The survey also examines companies' biodiversity goals and the drivers associated with the use and purchase of biodiversity credits, called "certificates." The #OBC and the EY team thank you in advance for your participation. Respondents providing consistent answers will be recognized in the upcoming report to be published at #COP16 🗓️. Thank you for your #collaboration in making a difference for biodiversity ! What is needed to fix #biodiversity degradation and restore #nature? I think about this a lot. 💰 Funding? Absolutely, halt the biodiversity crisis by 2030, we need to spend US$ 722-967 billion annually. But how to mobilize? And how to keep those who pledge accountable? 📜 Policies, like global conventions or voluntary schemes to incentivize the protection and restoration? Yes. We've made progress here with the Kunming-Montreal protocol and the 30x30 goal, but are not even scratching the surface on 'how'. 🏛 Regulation? For sure. Biodiversity offsets have been mandatory for a while in many places, but their effectiveness are questioned. So smart and impactful regulation I'd say. 💡 Now, there is a new approach circulating, that takes a rights-based approach, compared to the incentives driven solutions above: Establish 'Rights for Nature' 🌱 🦎 The Universal Declaration of Rights of Nature is available for feedback and commentary - link below. I highly encourage you to take a look. The preamble: Human laws have been misaligned with the laws of Life. We come from Nature and without Nature we cannot exist. At its core: Nature (every ecosystem, species, element, and natural entity) has an inherent right to exist, persist and continue its vital cycles. This right ensures that natural entities are not treated merely as property and resources for human use but are recognized for their own intrinsic value. I find this really interesting. At first glance, my reaction is why not? Wouldn't we all be better off if we did this in addition to the other instruments above? Wouldn't [Funding + policies + regulation AND rights for nature] > [only funding, policies and regulation]? States in Mexico are the first ones to adopt this: "The Congress of the State of Mexico, one of Mexico's 32 provinces, approved the inclusion of the Rights of Nature in its local Constitution with the aim of recognizing Nature, biodiversity and endemic and native species as subjects of rights". Who's next? Curious to hear your take on this. Would this help the fundamentals of how we protect nature? Or would it just open up for new types of litigation and accountability failures? Eric Wilburn Jen Stebbing Lucy Almond Adrien Pages Adrian Dellecker Alexia Kelly Tom Quigley Jay Lipman Oliver Dauert Elena Doms Antonio Vizcaya Abdo Clover Hogan Tim Christophersen Katharine Hayhoe Mark Zimring David Banks Gregory Watson Kristjan Lepik Grateful to Drea Burbank who shared this during a Climate Collective community calls - Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN) for coordinating the work.

As we all know, the biodiversity crisis, driven by unsustainable human activities, threatens global ecosystems. Despite efforts like the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, progress is limited due to policies addressing symptoms rather than root causes. If interested in a deeper analysis have a look at the recently published study "Exploring the societal factors enabling to halt and reverse the loss and change of biodiversity" by the European Topic Centres - Research consortia supporting the European Environment Agency. The report identifies societal barriers like knowledge gaps and governance challenges and proposes five strategies: offering alternative narratives, leveling power imbalances, enhancing knowledge, understanding societal acceptance, and strengthening governance. It also emphasizes the need for structural interventions, such as regulatory reforms and targeted funding, to support transformative change and achieve the EU’s 2030 biodiversity goals. KUDOS TO Alessandro Galli for the amazing work done! #biodiversity #EUBiodiversityStrategy2030 #sustainablefinance https://lnkd.in/dnHWeC7T
