Being able to provide clients seamless, forward-thinking refit solutions that simplify decision-making are powerful drivers to accelerate the energy transition. As long-term partners, we are proud to support the progress that mtu solutions and Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG are making in sustainable technologies.
The latest advancement, allowing HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and other DIN EN15940 fuel options to power the MTU Series 1163 and 8000 engines, is a major step forward. These cleaner alternatives require no engine modifications, making the transition effortless for owners.
In addition, these engine series now feature SCR systems that reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 75%, ensuring compliance with IMO III emission standards. This opens new opportunities for owners looking to lower their environmental footprint while cruising in Emission Control Areas (ECA), including the Baltic, North Sea, and North American coasts.
Congratulations on this achievement!

Rolls-Royce has now released the mtu marine engines of the Series 8000 and 1163 for operation with sustainable fuels (EN15940, e.g. HVO). Renewable diesel reduces particulate matter emissions up to 40%, nitrogen oxide around 8% and CO2 up to 90% depending on feedstock of fuel. There are no engine hard- or software adaptions necessary.
