It bears remembering that our journeys in life are guided and coloured by those we meet. Equally, it is important to take stock of where we are at any given point, to appreciate how far we have come and how far we have to go. I was glad to spend time with the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) School of Law International Negotiation Competition (INC) community to celebrate the good work and performance at the latest INC 2024 (National Round). While we may not have won on the scorecards this time, it was evident to everyone in the room that Team SUSS won the hearts and minds of those who attended the event. As painstakingly close as the results were, what was never in doubt was the camaraderie that my students and graduates showed in coming together to help one another succeed and do SUSS proud. They each took time from their busy schedules to help with training in the months leading up to the competition and came to cheer on their friends on the day itself. Well done to Team SUSS, Aaliyah Das Adele Lim for wearing your hearts on your sleeves and doing us all proud. A big thank you to Felicia Leong Hansel Chua who helped train the team amidst classes and who were doing their timed-assignments in the hallways of the competition, just so they could support their friends by being present. The same thanks extends to Yong Chuan YEO who accommodated us at his office premises and helped train amidst his busy work schedule. To aspiring negotiators and students Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) School of Law who might be interested in trying out for the INC, reach out and speak to your seniors and myself. Lifelong learning takes place across all forums and the training for the INC is an invaluable experience which leads to profound perspectives and lifelong friendships. Personally, I continually learn from my students in training and look forward to each encounter. Here's to the next run, we go again and we will be even better. I don’t know if this was common throughout the world, but growing up in Singapore there was a culture of school and national debates. These debates were telecast “live” and families would gather around to watch them. Good debaters became minor stars and household names – some of them going on to become media personalities, diplomats and even ministers. The topics chosen were always timely, interesting and of relevance to society. So I was excited to hear that the National Federation of State High School Associations – a major body in US education – has chosen intellectual property (IP) as the senior debate topic in the US for the 2024-25 academic year. (By the way, did you know that Brad Pitt and Oprah Winfrey were champion debaters?)
