"Ukrainian seafarers face critical hurdles in renewing their essential documents and maintaining their livelihoods." This not only impacts their livelihoods but also threatens the smooth functioning of the entire maritime sector. As the IMO rightly highlighted, seafarers are key workers. They keep the global trade and supply chains moving... But, Points of Concern: - Document Renewal Roadblock: Ukrainian seafarers cannot renew their licenses and certificates outside the country, putting their work at risk. - Travel Restrictions: New Ukrainian regulations may prevent seafarers from leaving the country to work, further crippling the industry. - Euro Union Residence Issues: Seafarers face limitations on their residence permits, forcing them to leave the country every 45 days We must extend our support beyond Seafarers' Day on June 25th and make every day a celebration of their contribution. How can we ensure Ukrainian seafarers can continue working and supporting their families during this war? Yes, If the flag state authorities recognise the extraordinary circumstances and extend the validity of Ukrainian seafarers' documents until the war ends... Seafarers can undergo competency checks later; a temporary solution allowing them to continue working with expired equipment could be explored. Therefore, I want to bring this issue forward... As the ambassador of seafarers and the president for Global Maritime Community (GMC), I urge all stakeholders in the maritime industry—unions, associations, and governments—to come together and find solutions for Ukrainian seafarers. Their continued work is essential for the well-being of the global maritime sector and the world economy.

Today, we celebrate the incredible men and women who sail the world's oceans, making global trade possible and connecting communities across continents. As a former seafarer myself, I have firsthand experience of the dedication, resilience, and hard work it takes to keep the maritime industry moving. Seafarers play a crucial role in ensuring that goods and resources reach their destinations safely and efficiently. They face the challenges of long voyages, unpredictable weather, and time away from their loved ones, all to keep the global economy afloat. Without them, the shelves in our stores would be empty, and our economies would grind to a halt. To all the seafarers out there, thank you for your unwavering commitment and the sacrifices you make. Your contributions are invaluable, and today, we honor and appreciate you. Let’s take a moment to recognize the importance of seafarers in our daily lives and support initiatives that improve their working conditions and well-being. 🌍❤️ #DayOfTheSeafarer #Seafarers #GlobalTrade #MaritimeIndustry #SeafarerLife #ThankYouSeafarers #Community #GlobalEconomy

The Day of the Seafarer, celebrated annually on June 25, is an important international observance established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2010. This day highlights the invaluable contributions made by seafarers to global trade and the world economy. It aims to raise awareness about the often challenging and hazardous conditions seafarers face, and to recognize their hard work and dedication. Key aspects of the Day of the Seafarer include: 1. **Recognition and Appreciation**: It serves as an opportunity to acknowledge the vital role that seafarers play in maintaining the flow of goods and commodities across the world. This is especially crucial given that over 90% of the world’s trade is carried by sea. 2. **Awareness and Advocacy**: The day brings attention to the challenges and hardships faced by seafarers, including long periods away from family, exposure to piracy, and adverse weather conditions. It also highlights the need for better working conditions, fair treatment, and respect for their rights. 3. **Public Engagement**: The IMO encourages the public to show their support and appreciation for seafarers through social media campaigns, events, and activities. Each year, a specific theme is chosen to focus on different aspects of seafaring. 4. **Policy and Safety Improvements**: It prompts policymakers and the maritime industry to continually improve safety standards, working conditions, and support systems for seafarers, ensuring their well-being and security. Overall, the Day of the Seafarer is a significant occasion to honor the contributions of seafarers, promote their welfare, and recognize their essential role in the interconnected global economy. #shipping #dayoftheseafarer
