Regular brands like Zara, Toyota, Casio try to get their products in as many hands as possible. But luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Bentley, Rolex do the exact opposite by being difficult to obtain. Luxury or high value brands operate according to the 'dream equation', which is the idea that there are far more people who dream about owning the brand than actually owning it. That is why a Ferrari makes only a certain amount of cars per year compared to a brand like Ford that makes 350K+ cars per year. The same concept can also be applied if you sell a service. The luxury fashion brand, Hermés, and the car brand, Ferrari have literally the same business model but in different industries! Let me explain... The business model that I am referring to doesn't have a name, but it puts the relationship with the customer and brand loyalty to the extreme. Both these companies "unofficially" require their customers to spend way too much money on the brand before they can buy the things that they actually want to! Ferrari is infamous for not selling its cars to anyone who just has the money. A customer has to spend time and money showing that they truly care about the brand by going to car shows, F1 races, etc. before they are allowed by the company to buy a car. It's crazy, but it works. It also reinforces the exclusivity of owning a Ferrari. Hermés does the same thing. They want you to spend money on other products and build a relationship with a sales executive to even get on the waitlist to buy a $30,000 Birkin Handbag! This too is bonkers, but it works. Seems to me that these companies know how to "create" scarcity and display exclusivity. Thanks to CNBC's recent video on Hermés for inspiring this post.
