MUSEUM OF EMOTIONS- Edition #4 Competition entry Title- The journey Description- The two spaces of the museum have the same maze layout but a contrasting impact on the emotions of the user. In the lower space the user can clearly see the goal through the transparent glass but still feel stuck, confused and frustrated. Whereas in the upper space, the user is not clear about the goal but still has a sensory experience walking amid the textures, colours, fragrance and the life around. MAXXI Museum by Zaha Hadid: A parametric urban campus that creates a multi-directional sequence of pathways to mimic the flow of urban life- and also the topic of my undergrad architecture dissertation. Built between the years 1998-2009 and situated amongst former barracks in Rome, MAXXI was awarded the Stirling Prize of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2010. When faced with the physical fluidity of the space, initially influenced by the delta of a river, it is clear that Hadid turned towards the new discipline of architectural design dependent on new image-making processes and computers generated algorithms: a term rendered the concept of ‘parametricism’. The interior of Hadid’s structure appears to be the main event in relation to the motif of an immersive experience for its users. The fluid pathways throughout the gallery are evoked by the curved concrete walls, which Hadid herself describes as similar to a wave breathing on a cliff. The constant motif of water is accompanied by ongoing sounds of dripping water through the pipes of the interior. I’ve focused a lot on Cape Town architecture in my content. Obviously because I call Cape Town home. However, I’ve travelled extensively and I’ve seen some architectural wonders all over the world. A few years ago, I visited Paris with my daughter, and I found the Louvre fascinating with its mix of architectural innovation and cultural preservation. It originated as a fortress in the 12th century—when the Vikings began invading the city—with thick walls to help prevent attacks. The transformation of the Louvre from a medieval fortress to the world's most visited museum comes from centuries of architectural evolution and ambition under the patronage of French monarchs. The museum's most recent marvel, the Louvre Pyramid, designed by the visionary I.M. Pei, was the subject of a lot of controversy in Paris. However, Pei's approach showed a deep respect for the Louvre's historical context. He studied the site, its history, and French culture, which informed a design philosophy that sought to complement rather than overshadow what was already there. The pyramid introduces a modernist element to the Louvre's Renaissance and French Classical architecture. Its transparency and geometric precision invite light into the museum's large underground lobby, enhancing visitor experience and accessibility. Completed in 1989, it is now the main entrance and has become an iconic symbol of Paris. The construction of the pyramid showcased Pei's innovative use of materials and structural engineering. Collaborating with Saint-Gobain, Pei developed a glass that was exceptionally clear, ensuring that the pyramid would not distort the view of the Louvre's facades. This attention to detail and commitment to quality was key to the project's success – blending functionality with aesthetic elegance. Ilulissat means "Iceberg" in Greenlandic, and it is located near the world's largest glacier, Ili Sermeq Kujalleq. Here, the Ilulissat Icefjord Centre was built, a project by the Danish architectural firm Dorte Mandrup known for designing the Centre to integrate with the imposing landscape and provide a permanent observation point for local residents, tourists, and climate researchers. The UNESCO-protected Icefjord area encompasses 4,000 years of cultural heritage and is vital for understanding the climate crisis. The Centre also includes an exhibition space that hosts the "Story of ice" exhibition designed by JAC studios, a multi-layered narrative to understand the past, present, and future of this unique place in the world. 💥The Eiffel Tower is a structure known almost all over the world. But does the public know the difficulties the architect faced?💥 Gustave Eiffel made a significant contribution to the creation of the Eiffel Tower, although the original project of the tower was developed by his employee Maurice Koechlin. Eiffel made the final changes to the project, focusing on combining the engineering scheme with decorative elements, which allowed the project to meet the aesthetic requirements of the World Fair in Paris. Architect Stephen Sauvestre also participated in the decorative design of the tower, working on decorating the tower, including adding arches and glazed halls. The 324-meter-tall tower initially faced much criticism from the public and artists who considered it unattractive. 📌Public disapproval: Many Parisians and artists expressed dissatisfaction with the project, considering the tower ugly. 📌Technical challenges: Building the tallest structure of the time required innovative engineering solutions, especially in the use of wrought iron and ensuring the stability of the structure. 📌Financial difficulties: Most of the project was funded by Gustave Eiffel himself, as securing sufficient funding was a challenging task. My review of the Venice Architecture Biennale Honestly, this was more about the Arsenale than about the Giardini because Giardini had a lot more architectural projects. And here I am specifically talking about the main exhibition and not the country pavilions. I felt that overall, it lacked architecture. There were some great ideas and issues raised but again do they belong in an architectural Biennale. And I recently read a review of the Venice Architecture Biennale by Rowan Moore. He also wrote it perfectly, “ In places, this biennale feels thin and under-resourced, which probably reflects the fact that previous iterations have had more projects by big practices, which tend to bring along additional funding. If you hoped for a burst of energy and celebration, you don’t quite get it. It suffers, as have previous biennales, from exhibits that are wilfully hard to understand, unilluminated by wordy and opaque captions – in a kind of language that architectural academe for some reason loves. In shows this big, you shouldn’t have to work so much to get to the meaning of the displays.” Again this was not about specific exhibits, it was about the exhibition overall. I spoke with a lot of people about this and most of them had the same thought. Honestly, I found some amazing work there, but if you weren’t able to go last year, you did not miss much.
