📢 Looking back on #COP16 As #COP29 begins today in Baku, we’re taking a look back on COP16 which ended in Cali, Colombia earlier this month. After an intensive and insightful week, our team returned with fresh perspectives and renewed commitment. The message was loud and clear: we must urgently address extraction, overexploitation, and pollution if we are to achieve the goal of improving global biodiversity by 30% by 2030. Here are our main takeaways from COP16: 🟢 Scaling nature-positive solutions: Accelerating bioregional and regenerative approaches is essential, and new MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) tools are helping bridge data gaps, signaling that the time for action is now. 🟢 Nature-positive bioeconomy: The bioeconomy has the potential to drive sustainable land use or perpetuate exploitation. A nature-positive approach that centers on Indigenous and local communities is vital for resilient ecosystems and thriving communities. 🟢 Land and water as one: COP16 highlighted that addressing seascapes and landscapes separately weakens ecosystem resilience. A unified approach to land and water is essential for effective biodiversity protection. 🟢 Rethinking urban spaces: Cities are unique hubs for sustainable change. Redesigning urban systems with nature in mind is crucial for resilience and biodiversity. 🟢 The power of collective action: Real progress relies on cross-sector partnerships that share responsibility and unite around measurable goals. Only together can we turn ambition into lasting impact. As we keep a close eye on COP29, we’re looking to advocate for nature-positive approaches in the agreements ahead. The path ahead may be challenging, but the urgency for action has never been greater. Keen to discuss how we can collectively drive biodiversity forward? 🌍 I have been closely following the UN Biodiversity COP16 in Colombia, dubbed the "People’s COP to Heal the Planet," with its powerful theme, #PeaceWithNature. This conference feels like the ideal fusion of purpose and action. Hopefully, this convergence will achieve far beyond mere words. As a nature enthusiast, I see this as an invitation for everyone: scientists, leaders, farmers, indigenous communities, and all global citizens to join forces to create an environment where nature is nurtured to flourish, protected, and conserved. It’s a collective responsibility to ensure that nature, our essential source of water, air, food, and resources, can continue to sustain life, businesses, and economies. When we choose to live in harmony with nature, we choose a future where both humanity and the planet thrive. Reflecting on COP16’s goals, it’s clear that thoughtful and adaptive leadership is vital to foster a “nature-positive” world. Leaders must prioritise environmental stewardship, embrace innovation, and actively promote biodiversity-supportive policies. Those in nature-focused roles must drive strategies that champion sustainable practices, ensuring they are woven into organisational frameworks that inspire real change. As we face unprecedented environmental challenges, thoughtful and adaptive leadership isn’t just an advantage; it’s essential for building a resilient, biodiversity-rich future. #cop16 #biodiversity #natureprotection #sustainability

🌱 COP16 >> Biodiversity talks are intensifying in Cali as the second week of COP16 kicks off. As with any negotiation, understanding the perspectives of other stakeholders is key to steering toward a desired outcome. In the corporate setting, CSOs, too, now have the massive task of putting nature on the agenda. How can sustainability leaders make the internal case for nature and secure buy-in from their colleagues? ➡️ Quantis' Alessandra Meloni, Auriane Bodivit and Marcial Vargas-Gonzalez share guidance here: https://bit.ly/4hjUfsV #COP16 #nature #biodiversity

Nature & Land Use policies accelerate post #COP28. Material & credible national policy announcements have doubled in last 12 months compared with the previous year, latest IPR analysis reveals. The analysis shows over 90% of nature-related policy developments tracked in the last year are in line with a pathway to a well below 2°C temperature outcome, the upper limit of the Paris Agreement. Russia & Argentina emerge as significant outliers, going against the tide of the global trend. But, despite this significant momentum, IPR modelling suggests policy developments do not go far enough to put the world on a pathway to 1.5°C, the goal reaffirmed by nearly 200 governments at the UAE-hosted COP28. To achieve that, IPR highlights policymakers must act much more urgently in several critical areas, including ensuring an immediate end to deforestation globally in 2025. This raises the stakes for the next 18 months, a period when governments are required to submit new, more ambitious national climate & biodiversity plans at two upcoming UN milestones, both hosted in ecologically ‘mega-diverse’ countries: #COP16, the biannual biodiversity summit hosted this year in Colombia; and #COP30 in Brazil in 2025. Earlier today, we highlighted the importance of the COP trifecta for this year. Now let’s talk numbers and solutions: As you now know, the numbers are not in our planet’s favour. → In 2022, 💰$5 trillion was directed toward nature-harming activities, while only $200 billion supported nature-based solutions. To shift this imbalance and close the gap, businesses must take action. At CFTC, we offer trusted, turnkey, nature-based solutions, driving private investment into nature. This leads to real progress in reducing emissions, restoring biodiversity, and safeguarding our planet's future. As we are in the midst of #COP16, we invite businesses to join the conversation. 🤝 Ready to make an impact? This year’s #COP16 is focused on “Peace of Nature”, a theme which highlights the urgent need to reset the balance between society and the natural world. This is a goal we at Genuit aspire to everyday through our purpose of creating sustainable living🌱. With growing urban populations, it’s urgent that we, as a global community, build resilient cities that respect and preserve the climate, nature and water systems we depend on. Without radical action, the impacts to our natural ecosystem will become more severe. At Genuit, we believe that real change demands: 🤝 Collaborative action: Cooperation across the value chain is essential to drive innovation and scale sustainable solutions. 🏗 Shared responsibility: Every stakeholder in the built environment must take accountability for nature and climate impacts. 🌎 End-to-end environmental focus: From product design to installation and maintenance, sustainable practices need to be embedded throughout. As #COP16 unfolds in Colombia, we remain committed to placing nature and biodiversity at the core of our growth strategy as we build towards a greener future. #cop16 #Biodiveristy #LifeAtGenuit

Earlier this week, our Senior Project Manager for Biodiversity, Anjali Dwesar, attended a fascinating roundtable led by H.E Razan Al Mubarak at COP16 in Cali, Colombia. The session focused on converging nature and climate strategies, the importance of COP parties listening to input from non-party stakeholders and breaking down silos, and the key opportunities to unlock finance for nature and strengthen the bioeconomy as we head towards COP30 in Brazil next year. Ms. Al Mubarak emphasised the need to ensure nature, climate and development strategies are addressed in unison with people and indigenous communities at their heart, underpinned by the principles of the bioeconomy. COP30 in Belem will provide a vital opportunity to direct finance through indigenous communities and organisations, establish the data and information mechanisms to steer innovation and new technology towards nature-positive action, and raise regulatory and reporting standards to entrench climate and nature-based solutions in the global financial system. #Climate #Nature #COP16 #COP30 #Biodiversity #UN #WorldClimateFoundation

This week, the #COP16 commenced in my hometown Cali, Colombia, which is responsible for the protection of biodiversity and decision-making about the safeguard of biological diversity. In these times, many organizations, large corporations, academic institutions, and government bodies are discussing the #SDGs and how they can be implemented according to their mission, needs, and how they find solutions that align with the 2030 UN Agenda. However, much is said about the SDGs, but very little is discussed about each of the pillars and how those pillars are interconnected. In this case, the environmental pillar is practically the foundation for both the economic and social pillars. Without the environmental pillar which is the core of what is being discussed in Cali and the review of the 2022 Montreal agreements made during #COP15 there is no possibility for the social and economic pillars to be achieved. This highlights the urgent need for practical actions to protect the planet's biodiversity and ensure our survival. Despite efforts to make improvements, the data is not very encouraging, and the outlook demonstrate a big challenge ahead to achieve by 2030. *The oceans are receiving 11 million tonnes of plastic waste. (#SDG14) *Although 120 countries already have an energy transition strategy, only 10 are leading the change, and all are developed countries. (#SDG7) *Almost 3.6 billion people have lack access to clean water, safe sanitation services, and basic hygiene facilities, and this figure may continue to rise as several countries start facing severe water stress due to climate change. (#SDG6) *Currently, about 33% of the world’s soils are degraded or severely degraded due to deforestation, overuse for agriculture, and the loss of biodiversity. (#SDG15) There is much to be resolved, and I hope the #COP16 proves that #COPs are not just spaces for discussion that are documented on paper and a nice leader’s picture. At this point of no return, #COPs must be spaces of less talk and far more action and concrete results. #COP16 #Biodiversity #ClimateActionNow #SDGPillars #Sustainability #EnviromentalActions
