🚨 In Côte d’Ivoire, open datasets misclassified 60% of cocoa plantations as forests. Satelligence’s analysis revealed that only 12% was forest cover in comparison to the 40-95% range provided by various open data sources. These misclassifications create false alerts, waste resources, unfairly exclude smallholder farmers, and increase compliance risks. As Science Magazine highlights, flawed detection systems make EUDR compliance even more challenging—underscoring the need for dependable data sources. Get to know Eric Verhoeff, our Product Manager! ✨ ☕️ Eric joined Satelligence after what started as a casual coffee with one of our founders in the beautiful Utrecht office, which quickly led to him becoming part of the team! While there are plenty of meaningful causes in the remote sensing industry, Eric says it's the Satelligence culture that drew him in. "Every morning, you're met with smiles and jokes as you dive into work on the often challenging issues of deforestation and ecosystem conversion. We take our work seriously, but ourselves not too much!" As Product Manager, Eric plays a central role in shaping our product strategy. He works closely with cross-functional teams to align features with customer needs, industry trends, and regulatory requirements. "Aligning teams is never a trivial task," he explains. "But I love building productive and trusted relationships—it's what I enjoy most about my job." Meet Rens Masselink, our Director of Data and Security! 🚀 Rens grew up in the small town of Gramsbergen in the northeast of the Netherlands 🏡 but now calls Utrecht home, enjoying its vibrant atmosphere. With a background in Physical Geography and a PhD in hydrology, Rens has always been fascinated by the potential of satellite data. But he also recognises the creative human potential required behind the data to create solutions. "What I love about Satelligence is that we don't just start with the data; we focus on the real problems our clients face and then find the right data to solve them," Rens explains. 🌍✨ Highlights from the Netherlands Pavilion: Transforming Sustainable Agriculture with Satellite Technology This week, Satelligence, Fedepalma, and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) came together at the Netherlands Pavilion at #COP16 to showcase how real-time satellite monitoring elevates transparency and sustainability in agriculture. Here’s what we covered: 🦜Instant Habitat Health Checks Satelligence demonstrated the power of real-time satellite technology, which can now evaluate habitat health and conservation status in minutes rather than months. This rapid assessment enables precise, data-backed proof of landscape integrity and biodiversity conservation. 🌴Transparency in Palm Oil Fedepalma shared how satellite data can confirm when oil palm expansion replaces only non-competitive crops and grazing lands, not forests. This real-time and independent information bolsters trust, as 19 million ha of land is monitored each day to act on any deforestation alert on the ground. As the industry prepares for upcoming regulations, such as the EUDR, Colombia is making strides by tracking smallholder palm plots, ensuring responsible sourcing, regulatory delays or not. 🛰️ Unlocking Nature Incentives Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) emphasised how satellite monitoring has become mainstream and how it makes nature truly visible, enabling incentives for conservation and aligning with digital infrastructure to support nature protection. Agriculture and biodiversity have been viewed as opposing forces.
