Sustainable Cities and Society publishes a new paper by Zicheng Fan and Filip Biljecki that brings a new paradigm — urban sensing via Nighttime Street View Imagery (SVI). The paradigm draws on the accomplishments of (daytime) SVI and gives attention to its ignored nighttime counterpart. The study included manually collecting 2,831 nighttime images across various urban functional areas in Singapore, and sharing them openly to the urban informatics community. This study demonstrates the potential of nighttime SVI as a valuable data source for mapping urban lighting and activities, offering advantages over satellite data. Free public transit for all. Sounds great. But is it, really? Last year, at #TMWC the round table, moderated by Sean Goulding, around public transport and incentives in cities strike a lot of debates and conversations. Is free public transport reaching the population we want? At EIT Urban Mobility we keep exploring how innovative solutions including shared mobility hubs, artificial intelligence, gamification, and incentive mechanisms can accelerate public transport uptake. Join us at Tomorrow.Mobility 2024 to participate in these debates and share your thoughts. In the meanwhile, we share one of our most recent EIT Urban Mobility - Urban Mobility Explained (UMX) video on the topic:

Smart Cities Expo 2023 The Smart Cities Expo 2023 in Barcelona (Spain) aimed to explore and showcase innovative solutions for urban development and sustainability. The event focused on promoting the integration of technology, data, and smart infrastructure to enhance urban living. Key objectives included fostering collaboration between government, industry, and academia, addressing urban challenges such as mobility, energy efficiency, and climate resilience, and exploring how smart city technologies can improve quality of life, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. The expo also provided a platform for sharing best practices and cutting-edge innovations in smart city development. Avia-GIS (Guy Hendrickx) was present at the expo with a booth showcasing how the combined use of VECMAP and VECTRACK can help monitor and therefore mitigate the risk of mosquito-transmitted diseases in urban areas, with a specific reference of potentially increased risk in greener parts of the city.

Global industry experts at the Smart City Expo World Congress this week discuss the value of cross-sector collaboration & power of ecosystems in solving urban mobility challenges. Eva Oosters, the Deputy Mayor for Zero-Emission Mobility in the City of Utrecht, described how Utrecht’s mobility ecosystem isn’t confined within municipality boundaries but extends to the national level too. The city is part of the Dutch Metropolitan Innovations (DMI) ecosystem which unites 15 cities in the Netherlands with 60 companies and institutions to find innovative smart city solutions. Going one step further, Utrecht is the president city of the international European organisation POLIS for the coming year. “There you can see how powerful it can be to work with all the different regions and cities around us on the continent to find solutions for the problems we all face.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eKHik7Ct

After our succesful webinar with BABLE Smart Cities we’re ramping up for a series of real life events in October and November as side event or integrated in larger European conferences. In all these events we will dig deeper into the barriers that prevent succesful collaboration between scale ups and cities, to make deployment of on demand, shared, connected, new mobility services go faster and more smooth. So pay attention when you are a scale up with ambitions and experience in doing business with cities all over Europe. And if you are a city that wants to make use of the full innovative potential of scale ups in boosting your transformation to a smart, sustainable, safe and inclusive urban mobility system. We no less than aim for solutions and solve the barriers. Registrationlinks for our NMS side events follow any time soon this summer. For the wider conferences in Parma and Barcelona you need to register seperately.
