Change Your Life, One letter at a time: #COREMHalphabet
🎉 Over the next few months, I’m sharing what I consider to be life-changing insights related to each letter of the alphabet – tools, perspectives, and reflections to help you live more authentically, connect meaningfully, and embrace a happier life.
As a psychotherapist, I see how small mindset shifts can create big impacts. 💫
Each post will include mental health INSIGHTS, journaling self-reflective PROMPTS and COMMUNITY questions.
🌬️ B is for Breathwork- simple, yet deeply impactful!
Breathing properly can manage stress and protect our physical health.
James Nestor reveals that most of us breathe too quickly and through our mouths, which can increase anxiety, weaken our respiratory system, and reduce oxygenation.
Ideally, we should aim to breathe slowly, around 5.5 breaths per minute.
Paying mindful attention to the breath, just for five minutes a day, can help you feel more centred and energised. 🌬️
🚧 B is for Boundaries🛑
🛡️Research highlights that healthy boundaries reduce stress, boost self-esteem, and empower us to say “no” without guilt. Many of us, however, fall into the trap of people-pleasing – saying “yes” to avoid disappointing others, often at the expense of our own needs.
Brené Brown emphasises that setting boundaries is one of the most compassionate things we can do, for ourselves and others.
✨As a therapist, I encourage clients to start small by identifying one area in life where they feel overextended or resentful. What’s one “no” you could say that would give you more time and space for yourself? Saying “no” can feel uncomfortable initially, but each boundary we set builds confidence and respect, ultimately making us able to behave authentically.
⚖️ B is for Balance
Balance is often the key to lasting happiness and health. ☯️ Strive for harmony between work, relationships, and self-care.
🧘♂️The Buddhist concept of the Middle Way reminds us to avoid extremes – to neither deny ourselves pleasure nor give in to overindulgence. Achieving balance isn’t about rigid control; it’s about creating sustainable habits that bring contentment. 🌅 Try the ‘80/20’ approach.
My book on teacher wellbeing (link in comments) explores the importance of maintaining a healthy life-work balance. It’s all about making sure life is your biggest priority, with work as a meaningful, but smaller, part of it—just like the image with this post.
📝 Journaling Prompt: Take 10 minutes to reflect on this: What does my breathing say about my state of mind & body?
🌍 Let’s talk! Have you tried any breathing techniques, or are there moments when focusing on your breath has helped you? What’s one small way you could introduce more mindful breathing into your daily routine?
Share your experience – I’d love to hear from you!
