A major issue for Sam and researchers like her are the major salary shortfalls between the PSPs and the salaries at the host universities, in the order of 40%!!! It’s the same for NHMRC and MRFF. A MRFF EMCR grant I lead, which was highly competitive and fairly prestigious, has a $1M salary shortfall, most of the salaries are for postdocs that are CIs on the grant. Only one host institute has agreed to fund the gap. The system needs to fully fund salaries especially for postdocs who have less options for salary support, are less well established, less well known. Or they spend their precious time writing more grants to fund the shortfall or work part time instead of full time. The entire system is broken. #MRFF #EMCRs #medicalresearch
Meet Sam. She just received an MRFF grant but it doesn't cover the full cost of her research. Don't worry Sam, this Federal Budget we have a plan to fix this 👉 https://lnkd.in/gBCervA7

This is a major problem for medical researchers, who are focused on improving the health of people in our community. It’s been estimated that a researcher will spend a third of their annual working time writing grant applications to find funding to keep the research going. Then when one is fortunate enough to be awarded a grant, it only covers a portion of the actual costs of conducting the research. Many end up working part time because the grants don’t cover the full cost of their time. Imagine if government grants DID fund the full cost of research - how much more could we achieve for the good of the community! Instead of spending our time chasing the gaps. The Australian Government has an opportunity this budget to turn this around. We have one of the lowest rates of research funding (as a percentage of GDP) in the OECD. AAMRI has developed a plan. A visionary government would see this as an opportunity to build the future health of our nation.
