Last week, PROPEL Health’s John Limited presented at Malawi’s Health Markets Community of Practice. Here are his takeaways:   ☑️ While Malawi has made significant strides in modern #contraceptive uptake among women of reproductive age, gaps still exist. ☑️ There is a high unmet need for #familyplanning: 13% among all women and 72% among adolescent girls. ☑️ The #privatesector plays a significant role in providing family planning services: 20% of all family planning users obtain their methods from private providers, and the commercial sector is the largest provider of #emergencycontraception.   Knowing this, we can #TakeAction! Given the critical role of the private sector in the provision of family planning, there is a need to: ✅ Organize private sector providers to ensure #quality of services at private service delivery points. ✅ Leverage the high demand of emergency contraception at the commercial private providers, to expose them to the full range of contraceptive methods available.   Follow this space for more insights from our technical experts on the ground. We’re excited to share a new how-to guide, developed by PRB in partnership with Samasha Medical Foundation! The guide, “Localizing WHO Guidelines on Self-Care: A Practical Guide From Uganda,” is based on work that began four years ago when #Uganda began the process of creating national-level self-care guidelines for sexual and #reproductivehealth and #rights based on the World Health Organization (WHO)’s 2019 guidance. The how-to guide documents Uganda’s approach and discusses the five-phase development process they used that could be helpful for other countries that want to implement the WHO’s guidelines at the national-level. Each phase comes with its own purpose, objectives, lessons learned, and suggested activities and tools based on Uganda’s experience. For Day 15 of my Breakthrough ACTION Advent Calendar, I’m highlighting another #advocacy resource developed by by #SRH team: Engaging Men as Contraceptive Users. #Vasectomy is one of the most cost-effective methods of contraception but it is dramatically under-utilized, accounting for only 1.2% of contraceptive use in #LMIC countries. When countries have invested in vasectomy, uptake has been strong. Vasectomy can contribute to improving #genderequality and expanding #methodchoice. This tool provides compelling presentation content that makes it easy to advocate for vasectomy with key stakeholders. Used in conjunction with the Breakthrough ACTION Vasectomy Message Framework (also available in the link below), advocates can hone in on a key message and select content from the presentation accordingly, with some case studies to back it up!
