I asked AI to create an image with the simple prompt 'Oracy in the classroom'. Clearly, AI considers oracy to be something that is delivered by the teacher verbally to the pupils... a transfer of knowledge and wisdom in a linear, one way direction. Whilst this was definitely seen in education in years gone by, pedagogy and best practice has moved with the times. Oracy now should be dialogic, 2 way and purposeful. It should open up debates, encourage curious questioning and ensure the talk is driven by the learners not the teachers. In a book I'm currently reading, it shows oracy as a blend of 'learning to talk' overlapped with 'learning through talk'. This is our aim as educators as we shift past that teacher-dominated classroom.

Great reminder in David Robson's piece in the Guardian today that 'If you really want to learn something, try teaching it'. I am sure many teachers are well aware of this, but the article had some really interesting context on the so-called 'protege effect' and the psychological research showing that we learn more about something by teaching it. Encouraging students to take on the role of teacher could be a really good strategy and more effective than self-testing, for instance - 'the brain boost appears to arise as much from the expectation of teaching as from the act itself. If we know that others are going to learn from us, we feel a sense of responsibility to provide the right information, so we make a greater effort to fill in the gaps in our understanding...Articulating our knowledge then helps to cement what we have learned'. Strikingly, the piece suggests we or our students can even benefit from the protege effect by teaching in virtual scenarios - eg try teaching a concept to an AI for instance by asking it to take on the role of a curious student.

California Educators and Administrators, on September 29th this year, a new Bill has been passed, AB 2876, that creates pathways for integrating AI Literacy into your classrooms. "Literacy" casts a broad net, defining how AI works, LLM creation, ethical uses of AI, safety, and more. This is a noble goal and a prerequisite to deeper explorations of AI in classrooms. Article below, text of law is in comments.

This is a very insightful view from Dr Adam England. Moving towards #coaching students who can be more #selfdirected in their approach to education with the assistance of #educationalAI will be much more effective in producing students who know how to think and understand #learning on a deeper level. Learning can and should be able to happen anywhere and we should be creating 21st century #learningenvironments for our students to do just that.
Do we genuinely have a significant national and global shortage of teachers? Or is it a question of using AI to develop, differentiate, deliver (in part) and assess curricula, freeing up teachers to mentor, coach, organise and build emotional resilience and cognitive capacity among students? I tend to think it’s the latter - we have enough teachers, we simply need to be more imaginative in understanding what humans do best and what machines do best

AI is integrating with the system, and as a result our education system must also follow. The more people trained to use this technology the more efficient we will be. We see the UCLA curriculum take this step. More can be read in the article below.

A good read on NY Times today on how AI can revive the love for learning and teaching. UN has flagged global teacher shortage and #AI holds great promise to create frictionless personalized learning for all. The author made the case that AI will never replace the human touch that is so vital to education....empathy, creativity, and passion. "Adaptability, not defense, is the greatest skill we can have to stay relevant in a constantly evolving world". https://lnkd.in/gjv5iN3g

#studentsaspartners in #alternativeassessment empowers and engages students. The University College Cork in Ireland "used a students-as-partners approach, pairing students with academic staff across the four colleges in order to reimagine assessment in the face of ever advancing AI technologies. These staff-student working groups experimented with ChatGPT in relation to assessment in order to uncover approaches to mitigate against the risk of unethical AI use and to consider how best to integrate generative AI into learning activities and assessment design across disciplinary contexts in ways that enhance learning and maintain academic integrity." You can read about the 8 case studies at the bottom of this page. Completely agree, although I can see why AI generated this image. Most curriculums are much more geared towards reading and writing than speaking and listening.
