California Educators and Administrators, on September 29th this year, a new Bill has been passed, AB 2876, that creates pathways for integrating AI Literacy into your classrooms. "Literacy" casts a broad net, defining how AI works, LLM creation, ethical uses of AI, safety, and more. This is a noble goal and a prerequisite to deeper explorations of AI in classrooms. Article below, text of law is in comments.

“AI has the potential to positively impact the way we live, but only if we know how to use it, and use it responsibly,” Berman said in a news release. “Children and young people today must navigate a world — and job market — transformed by fast-moving AI technology. We have a responsibility to ensure that all students, no matter their future profession, understand basic AI principles and applications, that they have the skills to recognize when AI is employed, and are aware of AI’s implications, limitations, and ethical considerations. This new law will equip all California students with the skills and training they need to be safe, ethical, and successful users of AI as it becomes more mainstream.” Great news for California! I’m curious how the rest of the states legislation is approaching AI education. https://lnkd.in/gpyxYSH9

It seems counterintuitive to think that artificial intelligence can help teachers reach children in the classroom more effectively. After all, what could be more distinctively human than lighting that flame of learning inside a child’s mind? And who better to coach a teacher on what works than another human? The short answer is no one. But the more nuanced response is that AI can inform teachers in ways that can strengthen the quality of their engagement with their students. We believe in its power and potential.

📚💡 California teachers are increasingly leveraging AI to grade student papers, using tools like Writable and GPT-4 to provide faster, more detailed feedback. This innovation helps students improve their writing skills more rapidly and allows teachers to assign more writing tasks. However, challenges remain, such as ensuring accuracy and addressing biases in AI grading. Investments in teacher training and thoughtful AI implementation are crucial for maximizing the benefits while safeguarding educational standards. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e8-RRiKS

🏫📚 Schools are innovating with AI to enhance learning in three key ways: Grading and Feedback: Tools like Writable provide instant feedback, improving student writing skills and allowing teachers to assign more tasks. Preserving Culture: Princeton High School uses AI-powered tools to teach and preserve the Mam language, enriching cultural education. Teacher Support: Greenville County trains educators to use AI for lesson planning and workload management, balancing tech with traditional teaching methods. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gANb_Rnb

With the rapid development of generative AI programs, the way educators need to approach both teaching and learning promises to change. The collection features chapters focused on research studies involving the use of AI in college classrooms, explorations of the ethical and practical considerations of AI, and specific examples of activities that can be replicated or adapted to use with students as soon as tomorrow. The book also contains prompts that can promote discussion among faculty members as they learn and adapt together. https://lnkd.in/ghjBDqA6 #ai #aiteaching #aihighered #ailearning

Some really good thoughts on teaching in this infographic I grabbed from Al Kingsleys AI education newsletter this am. (The different newsletters offered by some on LinkedIn has been a fun way to quickly grab news on AI topics from around the world.) Two things I liked from this delusions book in the infographic: 1) the active part of active learning is the “actively engaged” thinking on the part of the student, not running around doing things actively. As Jan (my Project Learn instructor) would say “it’s the thinking not the doing!”; and 2) the comment that oral feedback to students takes less teacher time and likely has more lasting impact. Um, yeah. The author of the book is noted in the infographic. #facultydevelopment

I am excited to be talking about 'Why AI means we need to know more, not less' at https://lnkd.in/e2UVAFmK. This is a subject very close to my heart, because of course I have a heart :-) unlike all our super smart AI. Those of us with hearts need to make sure that the exciting opportunity that AI brings for education is a good news story, in which people learn more effectively, more enjoyably and more fulsomely.

Great, balanced article by Khari Johnson about AI grading in schools. As a middle school teacher, I really struggled with the turnaround time for grading essays. Most of my feedback was not relevant to students by the time they got it back. So in 2005, when I got my first student teacher from SJSU, the first thing I had them do was take over first-pass grading. What a miracle it was! I ended up having three student teachers over time, and their timely feedback (which I reviewed before handing to students) was instrumental in improving writing in our class. Today, #AI has the potential to be that assistant teacher in the class. It's really not about replacing anyone - it's more about leveraging teacher time to its fullest and also ensuring that students get extensive feedback on their work. Some of the companies in this space that I am following are: Writable, Quill.org, AutoMark, Pressto, Marco Learning, CoGrader, HappyGrader. What are the others I'm missing? Alex Kotran Andrew Goldman Holden Meyer Dan Cogan-Drew Daniel Stedman John Moscatiello Gil Quadros Flores Jeff Simon https://lnkd.in/gwSz29zG
